Inaugural State of the Map Conference Nigeria 2022
Posted by Davidien on 13 December 2022 in English. My decision to participate in the inaugural State of the Map Conference Nigeria 2022 was motivated by a desire to learn new and improved methods for gathering, managing, interpreting, and analyzing geographic information. Attending the inaugural SotM Nigeria was a great experience. As a student majoring in Surveying and Geoinformatics. There were seminars throughout the conference from several presenters, but some of their lectures stood out above the rest. These were presentations from TomTom, Mapilliary, and Chicoco Maps, which is my personal favorite. The job that they, Chicoco Maps, are doing in the Nigerian port city of Port Harcourt is amazing! I constantly consider ways to lessen the likelihood of natural disasters occurring in my nation, Nigeria. But my quest led me to join the UniqueMappers Team (UMT), a Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team volunteer organization (HOT). I have actively participated in disaster response efforts in Nigeria in the wake of an oil spill, flooding, acts of terrorism, crimes, and disease outbreaks since I joined this group. I left the conference with the ability to comprehend geoinformatics and surveying theories and practices morally as well as the knowledge of cutting-edge techniques employed by contemporary geoinformatics and surveying practitioners. More than 40 people attended the conference in person in addition to the more than 150 virtual attendees who came to discuss their varied experiences with GIS, OSM, humanitarian response, and disaster mapping, among other topics. The conference provided me with the opportunity to interact, collaborate, and network with participants from the United States, London, Hong Kong, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Lagos, Oyo, Enugu, Port Harcourt, and other nations around the world. It also educated me on the various ways that OSM data and tools can be applied, which will improve my research projects. Yes, it provided me with yet another opportunity and adventure. I must thank HOT worldwide, HOT unsummit, WNH, LOC, and the Unique Mappers team for their honest efforts in providing a travel grant for me to attend the SotM conference. My thanks go out to the LOC Port Harcourt team as well as the national coordinator, Mr. Victor Sunday, for organizing, directing, and chairing this fantastic work. I appreciate you hosting the SotM conference in 2022. Looking forward to SOtM 2023 Kalu,David-Dien Ndukwe is a GIS analyst and surveyor. Contact him at +2348093597113.
