If anybody's interested, I have a Navigon 5200 that I'd like to get OSM on, but doesn't use the standard Garmin style maps. I'm not even sure where to begin on reverse engineering this bad boy, and I'm willing to help in any effort to bring OSM to the Navigon.

Had a quick look on the wiki and according to this page:
osm.wiki/Converting_GPS_track_data_between_formats
you have rte extension and looking at this page:
osm.wiki/Converting_between_formats
it is not supported yet.
But if you have a look at the various Garmin conversion programs, links can be found on this page:
osm.wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin
then you might find one of them "may" get you some way there, or you may be able to get them to help you.
Good luck :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navigon is a german company.
I have done some searching,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_database_management
The file format is *.map.
You can see there are many torrents out there with these maps, for example the a file name in the torrent is "Bosnia and Herzegovina_Q3_2008.map"
Here is a way to download pois to your navigon:
http://poiplaza.com/?p=cm_na
"you need a asc and bmp files for via PoiWarner"
"Generic CSV is what you want, the navigon will make the proper conversion upon boot up."
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13250
The asc file looks like this :
19.81910, 41.32800, Europcar, AL-Tirana Airport, +355 6 82093908
you can get a sample here:
http://poiplaza.com/download/zipfiles/3522/AL-Europcar_Navigon_Becker.zip
The navigon fresh download looks like this :
NAVIGON|GoetheRad :Fahrradverleih am Goetheturm|DEU|60599|Frankfurt am Main |Sachsenhäuser Landwehrweg|1|8.708896|50.089447
http://www.navigon.com/site/de/de/maps_services/web2pnd/transfer?cmd=favorite&apiversion=1&poiname=GoetheRad+%3AFahrradverleih+am+Goetheturm&geocoordinates=8.708896;50.089447&country=DEU&company=NAVIGON&street=Sachsenh%C3%A4user+Landwehrweg&zipcode=60599&city=Frankfurt+am+Main+&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.navigon.com&streetnumber=1

none of these really addresses the problem of being able to use OSM on the Navigon as the base map, as far as I can tell.
