I've finally got started with OSM, using JOSM and Bing Images, made a few edits around home, and trying out the GPS on my phone (Nokia 5800) using Sports Tracker for traces.
I've added in some local unmapped roads and need to print out the map of the unlabelled roads and go out and do some surveying.
I'm trying to ease into it at the moment, get the hang of JOSM, understand the best practises before I really decide which part of the whole thing I like the most.

Welcome! There is no limit to what you can spend your time on, so you certainly need to find out what you enjoy the most.

There are large parts of the bradford/Leeds area that are unmapped and glad to see there is a new mapper in that area. I was in leeds this weekend and did a few roads but not much activity up there.
Also use OSlocator (background in the potlatch2 editor or here: http://www.itoworld.com/product/data/osm_analysis/main?showMinor=true ) to see what other roads may be missing/different to the OS maps in your area.

Thanks for the comments!
I've taken a quick look at potlatch2, it doesn't look quite as good as josm, but the OSlocator background will be really great for locating areas which need attention. Potlatch2 shows the reported bugs too which josm doesn't. Great tip Rovastar! I'd seen the itoworld analysis, but had already spotted missing roads within a couple of hundred meters of home...

Yeah in general JOSM is better than Potlatch2 but for a quick edit Potlatch2 is really handy.
Glad to help and always good to go after the low hanging fruit. :)

You can get JOSM to show the reported bugs (as Potlatch2 does), if you install the 'MapDust' plugin.
You could also try the 'OpenStreetBugs' plugin which will show a different set of reported bugs.

OOh! Plugins! I'll take a look at those, it will save all the double editor switching. I fixed a few reported bugs last night, a few people have reported what must be turn by turn navigation errors, I need to find out what they're using which has failed...
Thanks for the feedback!
