2015 in brief

Ow yeah…

Potlatch editing

Sedihnya :(

Not this again...

You don’t mind extending your spring cleaning all the way down here do you? ;)

Hehe ;-)

MFM would be the prime candidate

Tried to make a comparison between OSM’s and MFM’s database. That’s possible, but some road names is not the same. But I haven’t updated my maps for a while…

Spend some time to check if the name comes from Waze. Negative.

I guess I should continue some work for the Wiki for the moment.

(Tolong komen le kalau “lawan tokey” haha)

New sat image and alignments

Oops. The link should be like this instead.

New sat image and alignments

No hard feelings bro, hehehe!

Great, another thing to mention in the Malaysia Wiki page. Will do it some time.

Regarding the latest Bing satellite imagery, Microsoft will give some hints about it. Recently in Penang (last December I think), quite a chunk of hi-res imagery mysteriously disappeared, leaving Mapbox layer the only viable useful imagery. Areas near Sungai Petani too.

Took them a few more months, then found out the satellite imagery in the Penang area (and chunk of the most north-west region Perak) is back up again. Imageries from October 2013 - still ok. The freshest imagery across the whole peninsular I guess is somewhere near Taman Negara (sigh…) (http://bingcoverage.org/?lat=4.336740238798254&lon=102.42948532104492&zoom=13&l=osm)[from July 2014]. But bad news for Sungai Petani. No updated imagery, but old images from early 2008 re-appeared. So it is really hit-and-miss situation.

New sat image and alignments

(March 2013 to the east, January 2012 to the west)

should be the other way around :-/

New sat image and alignments

It was me - did some work over the area (this mid-January), I tried to align the highways first. Moving (all) the buildings manually however… can be laborious. Need full focus (and also limitless internet usage quota - this problem is on my side).

The “latest” satellite imagery is from April 2012. I have kept tab on that based on my changeset - only to find out that Microsoft (Bing) re-added the older imageries which have been removed. So there’s no fresher imagery :(

How could I describe this… the April 2012 imagery is however is available up to zoom level 18 and only available near Kota Bahru (with respect to the whole of Kelantan state). Last time I did some work over there, if someone tried zooming to level 19 and above, the older imagery (from May 2005) will show up. As I am typing this, Bing aerial imagery will not be doing so - zooming in to higher levels (19+) yields nothing.

In addition, I have done the road alignments first, according to my private tracks, public tracks and Strava heat map. The more recent imagery is quite accurate, but the older imagery is not. I have lost my calibration apparently (I have to reinstall JOSM one time). My bad, I am not able to finish moving the buildings to a more accurate position. Need someone with better focus to complete that however…

Anyway, anybody knows how big an area is offset when we realign a sat image? One tile, 10sqkm, whole state?

That is really subjective. I have just recently adding things over here. Really blessed that this place managed to get OK-ish satellite coverage (March 2013 to the east, January 2012 to the west) but traces from the older imagery has to be realigned…

done by mistake but unable to revert it back.

Hi, I have tried reverting the mentioned riverbank. Should be back there, hopefully.

Berhati-hati dalam suntingan besar-besaran...

Hi. I would like to apologise as well if this has caused any inconveniences to you. Well, I usually write OSM diaries in Malay.

For any mass edits next time, please be extra careful. I have noticed that some unmerged ways that should stay that way (because of bridges, etc) were merged into a single way.

In addition, I would like to suggest using JOSM if someone has to deal with a lot of edits. I believe you have used Potlatch because it is easier to add/edit elements into any relations - I used to do so when I first discovered about relations before fully switching into JOSM.

JOSM would check for any inconsistencies such as an incomplete relation caused by broken relations for example, before you would upload a changeset. Also, it would check for a highway that overlaps a waterway at the same layer; and many more. It is really useful when you are doing a mass editing.

And also, just to let you know, we have to set up standards for the highway classification tagging - which should reflect the almost-uniform international standard that is being used. Have your say in the forums.

Tak letak source=* pulak tu. Komen la sikit changeset sama kot ye pun. Geram geram geram.

Berhati-hati dalam suntingan besar-besaran...

Lagi best bila merge habis semua. Kadang-kadang tu kes had laju lain-lain tapi tak tanda lagi la, nak double check. Hmm… effort habis kalau nak revert satu-satu.

Ramp yang memang takde, gatal-gatal tambah.

Anonymous note "spam" - not again...

kucai:

Same - the notes contain informations that are not tag-able in OSM e.g. “no waiting”.

Rajin giler letak note satu-satu. Frustnyerrrr nak resolve semua! Sape je buat sampai macam tu sekali? Yang paling geram, benda terang-terang dalam database tapi letak juga note. Hmmm… entah!

That’s another probability, but considering bulk note addition is being made only on certain highways (in this case, the Malaysian north - south expressway and some other expressways), that raised the alarm for me. I won’t complain much if the notes are added randomly. But along a noticeable long stretch - imagine 200-ish km long stretch; with a user which is out-of-reach; with a pattern as well - I won’t complain too much if that anonymous user also mentioned how does s/he gather such information. It appears like it is being done by the same person.

If it comes from a free, non-proprietary database, then this is great! I am very happy to fill in the blanks for OSM in the first place.

Maybe you’re right, I’ll give it some time. Right now I’m under a limited internet connection, so, I’ll probably see what happens in a few weeks time. The bad thing is I am not able to contact that user (to know more on the motivation doing so).

Hmm, perhaps it is just me, being too paranoid with all these small matters, LOL.

Indeed it is that app. But its developer has already put a stop on that so quite recently I have not seen them. Maybe for about 2-3 weeks.

But, refer to the last paragraphs, what I mean, it refers to something else, in fact I believe it is not caused by that Wisepilot app. I don’t know. I have no idea. Tons of note at one go. And in fact the note is somewhat weird, for example this one. As if the user is not aware of the nature of OSM’s database at all.

“Sekatan jalan”

Haha. :D

Insya Allah. Selamat hari raya brader. Ngeteh raya insya Allah tahun-tahun depan ke :P

Cuti

Ok… boleh try kot.

“… RSO Kertau (?) untuk job diorang hari tu (cuma kalau ada error masa diorang setup, error jugaklah yang kita dapat). Dapat 4 point MRSO x-y dalam 50 meter spread kot, lepas tu kita convert WGS84 … “

Huu… apa dia ni. Hahaha…

Haha. Tafaddhol buat dulu. Saya busy skek :P boleh usya jauh-jauh jela.

Hat tu kiranya kalau terjumpa surveyor, nak tanya depa macam mana?

Balik kampung

Thank you very much!

I would love to upload some of my GPS traces into OSM. However I need to do a few more things before I am ready to upload them. I need to remove some parts of the GPS traces, well, unfortunately, they could be used to reveal my actual house location (so, in short, a particular bit of security concerns, but please tell me if this is too much LOL). Really need your help on this one.

Anyway, I will try to do so. The internet connection here is somewhat intermittent especially a few hours before bedtime (argh!), but that would not really matter much.

So I’m doing my commute with a moped, so my coverage location is not really extended. I will help to cover most of places around Alor Setar.

Please advise me a little bit more, especially if you spotted my mistakes.

Balik kampung

Waalaikumussalam. Orang kampung ka… :)

Pakai tab jugak. Tapi lani pakai app OSMtracker. Sambil rempit EX5 tu boleh la tag POI. Hehe.

Orait. InsyaAllah.
