TopOSM Colorado

Posted by Ahlzen on 4 September 2009 in English.

It took longer than I thought, but I've finally released TopOSM (my OSM-based topographic map project) for the state of Colorado.

TopOSM-CO has a few differences from the previous TopOSM-MA, such as:

* Color-by-elevation in base layer.

* Contour lines and hillshading generated from the National Elevation Dataset.

* Hydrography (lakes, rivers, wetlands etc) from National Hydrography Dataset.

* The hillshading, contour lines and map features are on separate layers. Use the layer switcher (top right "+") to toggle.

You'll find it at:

Absolutely gorgeous. Without a doubt the best map tile set that's out there.

Great job. Now if we can get the rest of the states to pick it up as well. That is the way osm should be with layers you can turn off and on.

Really beautiful cartography! Would be great to get this rolled out to other countries too!

Awesome maps. Couple comments/thoughts...

Us Coloradoans tend to think green = trees; white = alpine tundra or grass. So in the mountain areas the white areas tend to be the area above treeline.

But that said, it looks a lot like the USFS topo maps in the areas I've looks. It is a fantastic map to look at!

I've been working on a similar project, but using the original USGS topo and "updating" it overlaying OSM, hillshading and perhaps some DLG files...

Did you consider using the USGS DLG files?

In response to Leigh, I've also been working with the Canadian CanVec files, which are identical to their 50k topo maps, (these are the files from which the topo maps are made)....any thought on creating the canadian topo maps?

Redbeard: Good points.

The altitude color map was really mostly an experiment and I may indeed adjust the colors in the future.

I wasn't planning on using USGS DLG data - that's where OpenStreetMap comes in. I don't think there's a lot of (relevant) information in the DLG files that isn't in OpenStreetMap. And, if there is, I'd rather see it imported or otherwise added to OSM.
