| tiles servers usage - part 2 | As you can read in my introduction, this was the reason for this report ;) |

| tiles servers usage - part 2 | The Idea is quite good Gnonthgol. Unfortunatly different aspects of a navigation app (rendering, routing, navigation, ...) have to make use of different optimized data structures, as well. So it's difficult to solve all this with just one try. And of course the most of our developers are already involved in a lot of projects.... There are already thoughts in doing offline vector rendering or to deploy only vector tiles. But it's not that simple...
With this post I tried to adress the current (and maybe again upcomming) problem that some Apps use the tiles servers in an heavy way. So I tried to make the bad ratios visible and to contact authors. The first easy step is to check if the tool fullfils our policy and maybe to switch to another tile provider. Nobody says you shouldn't use OSM tiles anymore, the opposite is the case :) |

| tiles servers usage - part 2 | Ah ok, that was how I explained it to myself. So I was right ;) BTW some OpenSource tools are effected as well:

| tiles servers usage - part 2 | Please have a look at the data itself, to get the absolute values. But as noted above, the total traffic number has fallen at 2/3. This allows you to check the browsers, too. But I was suprized that there is no string for MS Internet explorer. But I'm not a web expert ;) |
| tiles servers usage - part 2 | Well indeed some apps already ship an email adress with the agent. And some are clever and use a central config file, so they can change the servers without any big update process. I contacted all #Top 20 authors. |
| tiles servers usage - part 2 | Yes this is what I expected, cause this part seemed to be to much. |

| Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers | Ok I did some visualisations, maybe that this will help for discussions @!i!/diary/15190 |
| Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers | Sorry was my fault :( |
| Einträge bei OpenStreetMap | Hey hallo Harald!
| Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers | Anybody willing to create some nice charts, so we all can see the trends? |
Also erst mal herzlich willkommen bei OSM.

| OpenStreetMaps booksprint | Great, might you show us a screenshot of the current state? |

| Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers | Well managing Dev keys is another task that needs people to add this feature and to keep it running. Have a look at our website, there is so much stuff to do but we doesn't have that much developers to do the job. By the way this would break all current third party usage :( Mhh...even for open project it's clear that they have limited ressources... Would you start scrapening Wikipedia without any talks to the Admins (who would point you to some dumps) ? ;) |
| Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers | Hi menion, thanks for your reply :) Oh and of course for the fast steps to limit our problems. Convercing the prevention of new 'naive' Devs, what does you suggest?
| Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers | Well let me just say a few words, as the starter of this thread. I understand both sides but all in all we doesn't have the resources (servers, traffic, admins, ...) within this project, to deal with the tile problem alone. Besides there is a 'political' problem if the OSMF would offer a commercial premium service.
What counts is what we all can do NOW.

| Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers | The question is if all apps use a appropiate user-agent. I don't think so if I view the logs:
BTW there is an update on some tools fixing fixing some aspects:
@Firefishy please tell us if we can remove the labels on the wiki pages :) |
