Recent diary entries

Hi,
I was interested in how much of our community is active in the wiki to get in touch with the more experienced users.
Like this graph shows you

-2367 Users were active during the past 3 month (that is ~43% of all active OSM users)
-71% of this number did less than 10 edits
-97% did less than 100 edits
-only 35 users did over 150 edits

So on the one hand I was suprised that so much people do edits, on the other hand it is clear that only a few dozen people make bigger updates to the pages or the wiki structure as a whole.
But this is what caused the wiki to be as suboptimal that it is currently :( Similar to OSM a wiki makes only sense when it is updated by the masses and so it is lifely.

Wiki Software pages HUGE update

Posted by !i! on 26 October 2010 in English.

Hi,
who's reading my diary knows that I'm working on the wiki cleanup since a few month. Now thanks to Tordanik we updated the whole Software Tool related pages. He hacked a bot in the Scala programming language, that collects all instances of Template:Software2 and transforms into entries for a user customized table, including filtering and presets.
osm.wiki/Software

My part of the task was to clean up the datasets so the wiki. Therefore I outsourced the existing tools on seperated wiki pages and added their properties manually to our template, added screenshots,...
All in all this results in 2118 wiki edits during the past 90days and over 160 seperate pages.
I tell you folks that I will never solve one single captha again! ^^

But hopefully this will be a good showcase of what the users can expect from a tool and a short way to get what they need :)

Hi,

Help the Community Updates Newsletter!

Posted by !i! on 13 September 2010 in English. Last updated on 14 September 2010.

Hi, I'm pretty sure that a few noted the weekly Community Updates on the wiki osm.wiki/Community_Updates
This services is contributed by EMerzh but he is the only editor and has to monitor all the OSM channels (mailing lists, blogs, forums,...).

So come on, help him to make a weekly review for the OSM universe and drop him a line if you found something interesting
osm.wiki/Community_Updates/draft
Would be pretty cool if we can gain a few peoples to monitor all the OSM stuff, please add yourself here for coordination:
osm.wiki/Community_Updates/How_to_help

In Germany we have since a few months the OSM Wochenrückblick(engl. OSM Week review) http://blog.openstreetmap.de
That is realy awesome because simply nobody subscriptes all the mailing lists or wiki pages!

One more a big big THANK YOU for the teams doing this great job for our comunity week by week :)

request for comments: New Software list

Posted by !i! on 1 September 2010 in English.

Hi,

user:Tordanik was so nice to code a wiki bot that collects all items together, that we tagged with a special template on their software wiki pages.

This has the follwing pros:
-distributed editing of smaller lists, with named attributes
-single point to keep a software entry up to date
-we can decide on the look for different needs
-nice short box on every page (ok this one needs further improvements ;) )

Theirfore we like to know what we might improve to the lists, that we would like to put on the pages for every software platform (Android, Symbian,...)
osm.wiki/User:Tordanik/SoftwareTest
osm.wiki/User:Tordanik/SoftwareTemplateTest
(please use the wiki talk pages for suggestions)

If we finished porting all tools we will put them on the subpages of
osm.wiki/Software

Hi mappers out there, the most noticed that I'm cleaning up the wiki.

Cause I think it's a rock I'm already asking now, how we can improve the feature proposal process (think I will tune the page in a few weeks):
osm.wiki/Talk:Proposed_features#Cleanup_Request

We all know the bad situation and the slow down by a non managed process.

Please try to inform as many channels as possible for this discussion! So mailing lists, forums, blogs,... cause this is realy the 'big fish' and it has to be decided by the whole community :)

Think it would be best to make the discussion in the wiki, right?

Benzinpreise jagen mit OSM

Posted by !i! on 12 August 2010 in German (Deutsch).

Moin,

Wiki Linklist up to date

Posted by !i! on 11 August 2010 in English.

Hi, during the past days I merged/redirected/updated the
osm.wiki/List_of_OSM_based_Services

So this is now the central linklist for nice OSM pages. There are smaller list with picked favourites in every language intro page, which is fine for newbies to get a quick overview.

So please help us to keep this list up to date :) and leave a comment if something is missed, outdated, wrong...

So whats next? I think all pages around:

OSM Mediawiki unleashed!

Posted by !i! on 7 August 2010 in English.

Good morning, the most might recognize that there is a new version of Mediawiki online. So now the editor has become easier, what better time to clean up our Wiki, right? :)

Wiki is our central place for collecting simply everything! But for this reason a lot of pages came out of date or were just forgotten, bad structured,...

Inspired by my last graphic centered POTW I started to work on all Icon focused pages and try to grab all together on subpages arround:
osm.wiki/Map_Icons
Now I added all screenshots on osm.wiki/List_of_OSM_based_Services to promote the webpages better.

But what is about you? You know some wikipages that need to be improved?
Then help us!
osm.wiki/Wiki_organisation

Help the admins and endusers to get a better overview. Just add to a wikipage the following texts:
{{{{OutOfDate|describe...}} if it is outdated
{{stub}} if it contains less informations
{{merge}} if you know the content is somewhere else, too
{{move}} if you think it is usefull e.g. to group it as a /subpage
{{delete|describe...}} if you extracted all and it is just a dead body anymore

last POTW - icon competiton - summary

Posted by !i! on 1 August 2010 in English.

Hi,
well the last week we covered a lot of the 'most important' features with icons.
osm.wiki/Project_of_the_week/2010/Jul_25
I'm glad that a few people joined this 'competition':
-Rw
-Nadhp
-JasonWoof
-Peter Maiwald
-gulp21
It might had become more people if didn't done that much work on own at the very beginning ;)
Unforunatly I found the source of the mapnik icons only 3 days after se start, so for a few symbols we invented the wheel twice. But hey this allows us to discuss different approaches and to pick the best one :)

Now I'm talking to the admins to add a few more icons, feel free to join the discussion (with your osm account)
http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=8497

In the next days I'd like to merge/update all the icon related wikipages to make it more easy for (external) artists to contribute:
osm.wiki/Map_Icons
osm.wiki/Proposed_Icons
osm.wiki/WikiProject_Pictograms
osm.wiki/DE:Artwork-Team

For me it was a realy nice experience to manage this small project that I created from one day to to the other.
Especially getting in touch with other communities like Gimp, Inkscape,... was intetresting and quite nice and OpenClipArt.org tries to establish a deeper affiliation :)

Once more, thank you folks!
Matthias

POTW - Icon competition - 3 days past

Posted by !i! on 28 July 2010 in English.

Hi folks,

well our stat after 3 days is quite nice, even if I did a lot of work by my own ;)
So hopefully you take 5min to review our current results and may be you post a better candidate. I overworked the page to look more smart.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Remember: This is THE CHANCE to boost your fav feature! People mostly tag things that they had seen already somewhere (and therefore miss at a certain place) on the map!

So hurry up! 4 days to go and there are so much interesting things to visualize starting with all the traffic stuff(calming, barriers,...) and ending with gimmicks like shop=erotic :D

Once more: Be artistic!
osm.wiki/Project_of_the_week/2010/Jul_25

Thank you guys who allready helped to get the things done:
-Richard Weait
-Nandhp
-JasonWoof

Personally I have to say that only some of my icons are ok, some are to complex, so hopefully you will find better motives ;)

Videomapping example: helmet camera

Posted by !i! on 25 July 2010 in English. Last updated on 27 July 2010.

Hi everybody, I'm not sure if anybody allready checked out the updated page at
osm.wiki/Videomapping

But anyway, to give you a short impression of what is possible to extract from a recording I made this short clip:

Videomapping with helmet camera from heho on Vimeo.

Thanks to the ELMO company (www.elmo.de) I had a SUV2 helmet camera to make a few testdrives for my videomapping JOSM plugin and to compare different cams and setups.
osm.wiki/JOSM/Plugins/VideoMapping

Hope this would spark some interests in this new mapping technique that is able to improve our map with highly detail.
If I finished my plugin I will release a complete video tutorial that compares other cameras, setups, etc.....

Who monitors OpenStreetBugs?

Posted by !i! on 22 July 2010 in German (Deutsch).

Hi, everytime I promote OSB as an very simple tool to improve our map. But yesterday I noticed that in our state are so many useful bugs open (some forgotten but some waited for ~1year).
Well OSB just works if people that contribute see that their hints get processed.

So come on folks, check your area (and above) for bugs you can solve (without local knowledge)! And do it more often than just today, get a RSS feed of your favorite area :)
