TL;DR I am deeply involved in different aspects of OSM. I am running for the OSM US board to extend my contributions beyond data creation, community organization and research.

About me

I am Levente, originally from Hungary, now living in sunny South Florida for about a decade. I came across OpenStreetMap in the early 2010s and instantly became fascinated by it. I actually decided to become a scientist because of it, and much of my research career is dedicated to understanding different aspects of the OSM project, data, and its community. Now I am running for a seat on the OSM US Board to continue my long standing commitment to the project in a different role.

During the day I am a Research Assistant Professor and currently I also serve as the Assistant Director of GIScience at Florida International University. I also teach Environmental GIS there. At night, I usually sleep. Prior to FIU, I spent a few years at the University of Florida (where I earned my PhD in Geomatics) and also held short-term visiting appointments at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Villach, Austria, and at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy. In industry, I spent a few wonderful years at Mapillary (see e.g. here and here) and was also a full-stack GIS Developer at some point. I am an OsGeo Charter Member since 2023. While I am originally trained as a geographer, my background is more on the computational and data intensive side of the discipline and ventures into computer science and data science.

When a mapping service chooses to pay for the rights for the street data and navigation they turn to the government, the state government hand over the map of their roads and classifications of the roads. The government of South Australia has given this information to the OpenStreetMap project for free all that needed to be done is for someone to translate the data onto the map. I was that person, and it has done nothing except for russle peoples jimmys all the way to the OSM board. The classification of roads goes way beyond a single dictionary meaning and has lots of different considerations such as traffic volume, width of the road, whether there are hazards such as railway crossings that the roads are engineered to avoid, speed, intersections etc. Thankfully the people who plan and engineer the roads take all of this into consideration and classify roads accordingly to what the intention of the road actually is. As far as OSM is concerned none of this matters and “what someone thinks it is from the ground” is far far more important and accurate. I 100% get that when this project started not a single government anywhere in the world gave this information over to the project and OSM needed to come up with some meaning and right and wrong way to classify roads. So the project decided on “Use highway=secondary to tag highways which are not part of major routes, but nevertheless form a link in the national route network. Secondary highways are generally specified by country road classification bylaws”. Which is fine and people were happy with that… but it leaves out a situation where. what if a government somewhere comes along and says “heres what our roads are feel free to use this” well what you see in the above screenshot happens, OSM does not allow for Real factual official government data to be allowed and I think this needs to change.

I have started an independent collection of OSM SLA statistics. Approximately once a month, I will publish my results with the aim of enhancing transparency regarding the reliability of OSM services. I use uptime-kuma to run monitoring. I also verify connectivity with non-OSM services (to prevent false positives). The current configuration includes checking the availability of openstreetmap-website and openstreetmap-cgimap (API). Tile layer availability is not currently included in the checks. The health-check resolution is set to 30 seconds, and the checks are executed from a single server in the Hetzner datacenter in Germany. For the endpoint to be marked unavailable, two consecutive checks must fail. This should be well-representative of an average user experience.

Bydlím v Českém Krumlově.
Pohledem z výšky na město je snad každý uchvácen, jak se krásně rozkládá na meandrujících březích Vltavy. Jenže co je hezké pro oko, není mnohdy praktické pro pohyb z bodu A do bodu B.

Jak se říká, v Krumlově je “všude daleko” … protože se prostě musí chodit a jezdit tam, kde jsou ulice a mosty přes řeku. Nedej bože, když jeden z nejdůležitějších mostů ve městě opravují a tím město rozdělí na dvě půlky! Zásadně to změní život v centru.

Často se v Krumlově mezi lidmi řeší urbanistická témata. Jakto, že tu nejde tohleto a proč tu nejde tamto. Zatímco vedle ve Velešíně to například mají a žádný problém!!! Proč ne my??? Mapy to prozradí. Není tu prostě tolik místa.

Poslední dobou jsem se věnoval na mapách Čech místům, které byly po stránce mapování velmi zanedbané. A jelikož to už dávno není Českokrumlovsko, vybral jsem si Sokolovsko.

Okolí Sokolova je plné “ošklivých” míst, jako jsou povrchové doly, elektrárny výsypky, odkaliště, rozvodny elektřiny, staré sklady, opuštěná nádraží, brownfieldy a podobně. Jako by tam snad ani nežili lidé? Nebo žeby všechno toto spáchali lidé? Otřesné!

Lidé tam žijí. A ten kraj má spoustu míst, která jsou krásná a zajímavá. Např. město Sokolov je plné občanské vybavenosti, sportovišť a míst k aktivnímu odpočinku. No a vedle Sokolova je opravdu malé městečko Březová. Taková větší vesnice.

Zaujalo mne pohledem kartografa, jak je Březová prakticky “dokonale” rozvržené území, kde je pro občany prakticky “vše blízko”, zeleně tak akorát, dostatek parkovišť u domů, široké ulice a je tam taknějak vzdušno. Alespoň podle mapy.

Tam by se to žilo! Tam by nikdo neměl pocit, že je město plné turistů a nebo že v centru nic není! Tam totiž odjakživa ani nic příliš nebylo. Většina lidí z Březové a okolí jezdí do práce do nedalekého energetického průmyslu v regionu.

Téma energetiky a podtéma udržitelné energetiky je košaté. Já jsem se namátkou věnoval pouze některým detailům a ověřoval jsem si je přímo na mapě. Do OSM průběžně doplňuji detaily co dokážu zjistit.

• bioplynové elektrárny v OSM na území ČR
• fotovoltaické elektrárny i individuální instalace FVE v OSM na území ČR
• fosilní, vodní, jaderné elektrárny a další energetické zdroje v OSM na území ČR
• vysokonapěťové rozvody elektrické energie v OSM na území ČR
• další energetické objekty

V OSM jsem jich mnoho musel opravit, zpřesnit metadata, nebo některé vytvořit, protože záznamy o nich jsou slabé, chybné, nebo neúplné.

tak se vám ukáží instalované větrné turbíny na území ČR. Hodně nebo málo? … to posoudíte teprve až si zobrazíte kolik je takových instalací třeba… v Německu, nebo v EU … nebo jinde. Čím to je? žeby v ČR méně foukal vítr? To je otázka asi na někoho jiného.

Mapování a přinášení přehledů jak to s energetickými zdroji v ČR vypadá by to mohlo malinko doplnit.

Myslíte, že to bude někde v úrodné rovině Moravy, v polabí, nebo snad jinde mezi nekonečnými poli? Omyl. Je zcela uprostřed areálu Tušimické uhelné elektrárny nedaleko Kadaně.

Tedy na ploše bývalého bloku Tušimice I, který už je minulostí. V okolí zbylo jen několik souvisejících staveb, cest a tratí.

O pěstování rajčat nedávno publikovala firma i článek

Skleníky jsou vytápěné zbytkovým teplem z elektrárny a přeplňované CO2, aby hydroponicky pěstovaná rajčata rychleji rostla. Překvapivě sehnat technologický plyn CO2 je podle jejich slov problém. V době, kdy celý svět ohrožuje vysoká koncentrace stejného plynu v atmosféře …

V blízkém okolí Tušimic jsou další skleníky jiné pěstitelské firmy, také si pomáhají teplem z elektrárny.

Nová doba, nová řešení. Uvidíme, jestli jsou opravdu ta nejlepší.

Mapování katastru Tušimic mi přineslo i další zjištění. Detailně jsem si prohlédl jak tepelná elektrárna Tušimice II vypadá a na leteckém snímku rozeznal její hlavní technologické části. Kolem elektráren je vždy spousta podivného území, které je nevzhledné, ale pro tak velký průmyslový komplex nutné. Snad někdy v budoucnosti si je příroda zase převezme zpět.

After fighting the user interface, both here and after installing JOSM on my system, I’m inclined to just forget about OSM for now. Something needs to radically change if the local contributions are of any value here. I simply do not have the time to attempt to master a very broken u.i.

Eu sou Pedro Ricardo, mapeador voluntário para o OpenStreetMap desde 2021 e sou estudante de Meio Ambiente. Contribuo principalmente com o mapeamento de regiões próximas ao Curimataú paraibano.

Esse texto trata de uma sugestão de tags a serem usadas em vegetações do bioma Caatinga. Decidi fazê-lo porque não encontrei material suficiente que aconselhasse como caracterizar sua vegetação, tanto nos grupos do OSM quanto na Wiki.

O bioma Caatinga é endêmico do Brasil, ou seja, não existe em nenhum outro país e apresenta espécies únicas. Compreende a maior parte da região Nordeste brasileira e apresenta várias variações (fitofisionomias) tornando difícil a generalização e simplificação de suas características vegetais. As variações são tantas que estudiosos preferem trabalhar com o termo caatingas, no plural. Entretanto, com o objetivo de facilitar no mapeamento, tentei encontrar atributos já existentes no OpenStreetMap para destacar sua individualidade em relação aos outros biomas sem ferir tanto com suas peculiaridades. As justificativas para o uso são dadas ao longo do texto.

Preparations

Underway of preparing for the trip, and making sure I have everything and dealt with the commitments before leaving. I am looking forward, perhaps particularly to Bulgaria and Greece but also to Germany, Prague, Budapest, and Transylvania. We will see how long I travel. Maybe would be nice to continue somewhere and return in late April. Maybe the Nordics or Turkey and Georgia. We’ll see! I think I should maybe slow things down a little while sticking to the plan, not be overambitious, and enjoy.

Les randonnées sur la commune existent officiellement depuis juillet 2022, il était temps de les faire apparaître sur OSM. C’était également l’occasion de tester les relations, notamment via ID.

Cela a été finalement assez facile et intéressant, et l’occasion de compléter quelques cheminements piétons, des POI touristiques ou mémoriels (2nde GM, cartes postales, observatoire à animaux, …).

Il ne restera qu’à parcourir physiquement ces différentes randonnées avec Street Complete pour parfaire les informations !

Note : Impossible de générer la carte interactive centrée sur le contenu à partir de cette requête (ajout d’icone sur les POI). D’ailleurs ça ne veut pas non plus prendre en compte des tags node[historic=memorial] ou node[information=map] pour y associer des icones différents. Un peu d’aide est souhaité ^^. I’m new to mapping. I’m trying to map the neighborhood common areas.

I thought I’d start with OSM maps, but they’re not in good shape for describing the right property lines - literally not the right shape, yet. For example, when I look at my neighborhood, there’s a grey blob named “Residential Area” surrounding all the homes, but it doesn’t follow their property lines properly. The boundaries of the neighboring research refuge are also incorrect, extending into the private properties and common areas. And our neighborhood appears to be labeled with a point as opposed to a containing area.

Before I start trying to add or edit features for my neighborhood, I need to learn what I should be changing and what I should be leaving alone. Do I edit the “Residential Area” shape to match the external boundaries formed by private and common-area property lines? And then can I label it with our neighborhood name? Or do I add a new shape with that boundary and label? Or, more likely, follow some other established practice?

Une semaine plus tranquille avec assez peu de changements par rapport aux précédents updates. Ce n’est pas qu’il n’y ait rien à faire ou quoi bien sûr, mais l’absence d’une image satellite récente devient un petit peu limitante et je ne sais pas s’il y aura même un update 2023 du SPW (🤞). En attendant donc, j’ai décidé de faire un peu mumuse en dehors de ma zone habituelle, mais c’est fatalement plus limité vu que je connais moins ces endroits.

Pour ce qui est des vidéos, j’en ai de nouveau trois cette semaine :

Améliorons Flémalle (sur OpenStreetMap) - Épisode 6 (La chasse aux pins) - Version live de ce changeset où je dégage le plus possible de pins/noeuds d’adresse de Flémalle (et Seraing un peu)

Ce mappeur OpenStreetMap change quelques rues près de l’aéroport de Bierset - Version live de ce changeset où je corrige un certain nombre de rues près de Liège Airport. Le problème ici (et que j’ai remarqué après coup) est que je pense avoir remis certaines rues comme elles sont en temps normal, mais pas la situation actuelle apparemment (zone en travaux). Ça m’apprendra à ne pas lire les notes précédentes 😬

Améliorons Seraing (sur OpenStreetMap) - Épisode 26 (Opération passages piétons) - Version live de ce changeset où j’ajoute et mets à jour les passages piétons dans le Fond de Seraing. Une bonne partie de la vidéo est en vitesse rapide avec de la musique parce que c’est réellement juste ça

Pour être honnête, il est probable que je ne fasse que deux vidéos par semaine si je continue à ce rythme moins soutenu, parce que j’avoue que cette dernière vidéo a été faite un peu à l’arrache.

C’est tout pour cet update donc. On verra si je continue à cette cadence plus faible ou si je retrouve d’autres trucs à faire.

Sweden Solar System

I just thought I’d update my diary and give a shout for my trusty GT-31. Every few years I revive it and take it out for some data logging. This year I took it around the new Waterbeach development near Cambridge, UK. It worked perfectly. This is an amazing piece of kit.

One slight let-down was discovering that GPSBabel seems to have dropped support for the GT-31’s native SBP format. I thought that might be the end of my OSM career, but then luckily I found that I can still run the old NaviSys software on Windows 11. I can’t connect to the GT-31 over USB any more (why not?) but I can load the SBP file from the SD card and convert it to GPX. I can then drop the GPX file straight into OSM’s iD editor. Such great software!
