Recommendations

Categorization of roads in the Republic of Macedonia is regulated by the Law for Public Roads [1] where roads are classified in terms of their importance. Motorways and express roads in addition by this law must meet and some criteria to be classified as such. With OSM recommendation and assumptions for tagging of highway=* just highway=motorway implies anything about quality and roads must meet some physics criteria. For all other roads more important is the importance of the road than its physical features. Macedonia except for motorways have criteria for express roads too and have to meet certain physical characteristics required by law. This roads are marked with motorroad=yes. All other roads whether they are paved or not, wide or narrow, whether linking towns or villages is recommended to be mapped according to their importance. The physical characteristics of these roads are defined with additional parameters such as surface=*, width=* or similar..

Roughly proposed solution for mapping the roads in Macedonia, out of settlements, taking into account their importance is following:

highway=motorway - (Автопат) Category A highway that have physically separated paths in both directions and at least two lanes for driving plus a one for stopping or roads defined as a highway with appropriate traffic sign
highway=trunk - Category A roads which are not highways. Additionally motorroad=yes for express roads

highway=primary - Regional roads of first category labelled as R1*** and old A roads
highway=secondary - Regional roads of second category labelled as R2***
highway=tertiary - Regional road with special importance labelled as R29*** and all local roads under the jurisdiction of municipalities
highway=unclassified - All other roads not covered by the above categories
