Proposal
The new tag brt=yes would indicate that a route=bus is a Bus rapid transit. Bus rapid transit is a public transport bus route designed to have much more capacity, reliability, and other quality features than a conventional bus system. Often it includes separate infrastructure, paying on the platform and to the busdriver, especially large buses etc.
Rationale
There is no current way to mark BRTs in OSM. We have highway=busway, but it has its problems and is applied unevenly. Anyway, it consists with physical infrastructure. But whether a route is a BRT is a function of the route more than the infrastructure (a bus route can be BRT even if a part of it uses non-dedicated infrastructure). This would allow renderers to easily highlight BRTs. For more information about BRT.
Tagging
| brt=yes | Use to indicate a bus route is a part of BRT |
|---|---|
| brt=no | This is the default implied value but can be made explicit - it means this is an ordinary bus route |
Examples
All the systems that meet the definition should be tagged. It is not important whether something is called a BRT, it must physically meet he criteria. It however does not need to be named as BRT if it in fact is. Refer to the wikipedia page for many examples of this system: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_rapid_transit
Rendering
Of similar importance to how subway are rendered.
