The Open Mapping Hub – Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) is now calling for applications for our 2025 ESA Validator Fellowship. We invite our Regional OSM Communities and contributors, Validators, HOT mentees, and DQI (Data Quality Initiative) Alumni in the region to apply. The ESA Validator Fellowship is a fully funded remote program that begins with intense study on advanced open-source tools. The fellowship will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

=== About the ESA Validator Fellowship ===
The ESA Validator Fellowship is a 9-week remote program. We’re seeking 50 dedicated volunteers to ensure the reliability of OpenStreetMap data across 23 countries. The Fellowship journey is structured into three distinct phases.

* Weeks 1-3 (JOSM Deep Dive): Focus on achieving Mastery of core validation tools and techniques. Activities during this period include intense training on Introduction to JOSM, Advanced JOSM techniques, and Conflict Resolution.
* Weeks 4-9 (Intense Validation & QA): The program transitions into this phase dedicated to practical application through Validation Mapathons and training in advanced Quality Assurance tools like OSMcha and Maproulette. The key outcome is the development of the Confidence you need to make crucial "judgment calls" on data quality.
* 3 Months Post-Training: The program requires a commitment to an Active Validation Period, during which you apply your skills to achieve monthly contribution targets and earn your official certification.

=== What the Fellowship Offers You ===
We are committed to building your skills, boosting your confidence, and ensuring you feel valued for your critical contribution to the open mapping community.

* Professional Skill Advancement:

The Fellowship provides you with an intensive curriculum focused on advanced data quality tools and techniques, enabling you to move significantly beyond basic mapping. You will achieve mastery in Advanced JOSM, covering complex techniques such as Conflict Resolution, Feature History, Filters & Selections, Multipolygons, and Relations. Furthermore, we ensure your confidence in Essential Open Mapping Tools like QGIS and Mobile Mapping Tools. For Formal Recognition, you will receive Certificates of Participation and be afforded the opportunity for Recommendation Letters to enhance your professional CV and career prospects.

* Exclusive Community, Access to Paid Opportunities & Support

You will benefit from being part of a supportive, focused cohort with direct access to mentorship and peer-to-peer sharing. This structure includes Dedicated Support via a Focal Person and an exclusive validator channel for constructive feedback and mentorship. We prioritize Recognition and Rewards through a system that actively promotes and appreciates your contributions, utilizing digital badges, thank-you notes, and social media appreciation. High-performing individuals are provided a Leadership Pathway, granting them opportunities to step into coordination roles by leading training sessions and organizing validation mapathons.

* Tangible Impact

Your contribution will directly impact the reliability of open data used by humanitarian organizations across 23 ESA countries. The Project Goals stipulate that you, as part of our cohort of 50 trained validators, will work to validate 50,000 buildings and 1,000 km of roads per month, significantly strengthening trusted L2-L4 data quality across the region. A core objective is Confidence Building, ensuring you gain the confidence needed to make crucial "judgment calls" on data quality for complex regional projects.
