Use amenity=toilets to identify the location of a toilet open to the public. Related names for toilets include: ‹ privy › ‹ head › ‹ restroom › ‹ bathroom › ‹ lavatory › ‹ water closet › ‹ toilets › ‹ latrine › ‹ outhouse › .
How to tag
Place a node centrally at the location of the toilet amenities and tag it amenity=toilets. Alternatively draw an area over the toilet building, tag it building=yes and amenity=toilets. Then consider annotating with:
toilets:disposal=*toilets:disposal=flushtoilets that move waste away from immediate area using a liquid (usually water).toilets:disposal=pitlatrinewaste falls into a lined or unlined pit.toilets:disposal=chemicalwaste falls into a lined pit filled with a chemical.toilets:disposal=bucketwaste drops into a container which is periodically removed by hand.
toilets:position=*one or more of seated, squat, urinal (e.g. "seated;urinal" if the facility supports both use positions).
Toilets can have complex access rules. Those rules useful to toilets include:
access=publicexplicitly public and open to whoever walks up (afee=*may still apply).access=permissivewhile nominally private, no visible attempt is made to restrict access, and casual use appears to be tolerated by the owners.access=customerswhile open to the public, the clear policy is to require a purchase prior to use.
Useful combinations include:
description=*drinking_water=yes/no/seasonalif a drinking water source is immediately associated with (usually outside) the toilet. Note: if you have detailed tagging needs, it is cleaner to create a separate node asamenity=drinking_water.fee=yes/noindoor=yesif the toilet entrance is indoors. Outdoor entrances are otherwise assumed.name=*opening_hours=*operator=*name of entity responsible for toilet (e.g. "City of X").supervised=yes/no/intervalif the toilet is staffed. Note that a cleaner might expect a tip.wheelchair=yes/no/limited
Especially for visually impaired users, you can tag a building node with:
entrance=yesfemale=yes/nofor tagging a female-only entrance or area.male=yes/nofor tagging a men-only entrance or area.unisex=yes/nofor tagging areas or entrances available to all.
Toilets within places
Facilities such as shops and pubs often have toilets inside them for customers, and sometimes free for the public as part of a scheme (e.g. Richmond Council). On the usual tags of amenity=pub, building=yes, shop=* add the following tags and use the 'toilets' namespace.
toilets=yes/nothis refers to toilets accessible to the publictoilets:wheelchair=yes/no/limitedthis refers to toilets accessible to a member of the public in a wheelchair. Seewheelchair=*toilets:access=*see above
Please do not use toilet=yes (singular). In general please do not map toilets that are inaccessible to the public. Many buildings have toilets inside for workers or owners, but mapping these could create needless conflict or unrealistic expectations. Use toilets=no for places you might expect to find a usable toilet (e.g. a railway station or trailhead) where no public toilets are made available.
Other proposed or emerging keys for toilet tagging
access=keyused if you must first ask for a key or token to access the facility.composting=yesman_made=septic_tankif the toilet is connected to septic tank.toilets:access=customers/public/permissive/ask for keytoilets:paper_supplied=yes/nois wiping paper supplied? (Formerly "toilets:byop").toilets:changing_table=yes/nofor units with diaper changing tables (DE: Wickeltisch).toilets:handwashing=yes/noare handwashing facilities provided?toilets:scheme=xxxname or URL of community toilet access scheme.

I oppose this proposal. For now. Some objections:
- Please drop access=inquiry. It means essentially the same as access=private, and
access=*is for legal access rights, not practical door locking mechanisms like keys or codes. Please replace it with something like locked={yes|no|system_name}. toilets:position=* should be toilets:position:*={yes|no}. Rationale: there will more than one type in a huge number of larger toilet facilities worldwide. Urinals along with stalls are common in the majority of gents here, for example. The semicolon is best avoided if we can think of better methods, and using sep[a]rate tags is easier for JOSM preset writers.Actually, as an afterthought: toilets:position*** could be replaced with capacity tagging entirely. --achadwick (talk) 12:50, 24 July 2013 (UTC)- This proposal does not yet allow for the number of toilets within a block to be recorded. Please update it to suggest using
capacity=*for the total number, and capacity:<position>=* for recording the specifics, much like theparking=*suggestions.
- Please drop access=inquiry. It means essentially the same as access=private, and
- If these objections are addressed, please go ahead with this rewrite. --achadwick (talk) 11:08, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

I oppose this proposal. How to tag pissoir only (men only!) toilets? It would make more sense to say toilets:urinal=yes|no, toilets:seated:yes|no, toilets:men=yes|no, toilets:women:yes|no. Also, wheelchair=limited makes no sense for toilets. Either there is a toilet usable for a wheelchair or there is not. /al 07:16, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- please note that pissoir has become vulgar in French, if not regarded as slang. urinoir is the appropriate word. --Papou (talk) 09:18, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- wheelchair=limited comes from the wheelmap.org community. It means "awkward but possible", but as it is a tag drawn from other use it is outside the scope of this proposal. Brycenesbitt (talk) 00:45, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
