In analogy with the suffixes :forward and :backward the proposed suffix :both_ways can be used to specify lanes or similar features running in both directions of the OSM way.
Rationale
Currently there exist the suffixes :forward and :backward which e.g. are used in lanes:forward=* to specify the number of lanes in the same direction of the way and lanes:backward=* for those lanes running in opposite direction. We are missing the possibility for lanes/features/properties, which run in both directions.
This suffix could be useful e.g. together with reversible, median or centre turn lanes.
Tagging
Add the suffix :both_ways to the existing OSM key to restrict its meaning to lanes or similar features running in both directions.
Examples
| Description | Image/Photo | Tags |
|---|---|---|
| A typical example (marked in red) of a lane for both driving directions in the middle of a junction. | lanes=3lanes:both_ways=1turn:both_ways=left
| |
| A typical example of a centre turn lane. | lanes=3 lanes:both_ways=1 | |
| A great example of the creativity of today's traffic planners: the light-grey lane in the middle is a so called multi-purpose lane, which might be used in both directions by all road users, even pedestrians. Vehicles may use it for e.g. turning or accessing buildings. (This is an official statement) | lanes=5 lanes:backward=1 lanes:forward=3 lanes:both_ways=1 vehicle:lanes:backward=yes|no bicycle:lanes:backward=no|designated vehicle:lanes:forward=yes|no|yes|no|yes bicycle:lanes:forward=no|designated|no|designated|yes turn:lanes:backward=none|through turn:lanes:forward=left|left|through|through|right access:lanes:both_ways=yes |
