Rationale
As distributed generation systems become more widespread, so do the necessary distributed energy storage systems (DESS). In general, these systems are comprised of small, decentralized, grid-connected generators and energy storage devices that are located close to the load they serve. While power=generator is used to tag both decentralized generators as well as those located in a power plant, no such tagging exists for batteries at either location. Analogously, the tag power=battery should be created to tag energy storage devices.

| Method | Battery Classification | Battery type | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
mechanical
kinetic
flywheel
A flywheel works by accelerating a rotor (flywheel) to a very high speed and maintaining the energy in the system as rotational (kinetic) energy. |
gravity
A gravity battery stores gravitational energy by using excess energy to raise a mass, which is then dropped when the energy is needed. | ||
PSH
Pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, which is pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation. | ||
electrochemical
lead-acid
FLA
Flooded lead-acid (FLA) batteries are composed of lead alloy electrodes with a sulfuric acid solution as the electrolyte. (Typical car battery currently) |
AGM
Absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries differ from flooded lead–acid batteries in that the electrolyte is suspended in glass mats. |
