Summary
Shows the location of a wayside shrine.
These are rather frequent in southern Germany and Austria, where they are known under various names: Bildstock, Marter, Marterl etc. They are usually made from stone, about 2m high and often show religious depictions.
Optionally a name and the construction year can be added with the name and start_date keys respectively.

Comments
- This is just a type of memorial EXACTLY as the references define them ( with my google translation! ) so add type=shrine to Tag:historic=memorial. It may also be appropriate to expand the list to include other memorial types Lsces 07:54, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
- I disagree. While mapping a wayside_shrine, I'd never consider it being a memorial. I support the extra value. --SlowRider 10:08, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- While a wayside_shrine can be erected in memory of someone or something it's primary purpose is not as a memorial as I understand it. Today it's more of a navigational aid than POI, at least as far as I understand it (I'm a protestant), so I support the extra value. --Deelkar (talk) 09:48, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- I was looking for a tag for wayside crosses(called "Wegkreuz" in german), because it's a common POI for hiking in germany. I also support this extra value --StRafl 10:14, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- This should go under "place of worship". --Lulu-Ann 15:59, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
