Используется для описания физического материала на поверхности земли. К почвенным покровам относятся трава, асфальт, деревья, голая земля, вода и т. д.

Наземный покров (или напочвенный покров) используется для описания материала, покрывающего поверхность земли. К земному покрову относятся трава, асфальт, деревья, голая земля, вода и т. д. Также см. Landuse, где описывается использование земли человеком, включая такие теги, как landuse=farmland, leisure=park или amenity=school.

В настоящее время в качестве описания наземного покрова используются разнотипные категории тегов, например, можно предположить, что покрытие парка состоит из травы, но некоторые его участки покрыты деревьями, песком или другими покрытиями.
