| Description |
In 1990, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary was designated to protect some 2,900 square nautical miles of extensive seagrass beds, mangrove forests and the world's third largest barrier reef. More than 6,000 species, from seabirds to dolphins, find refuge in the sanctuary. Plus, the sanctuary welcomes visitors to enjoy recreational activities like snorkeling and fishing, while helping to ensure that these activities only happen in ways and at places that are not harmful to the sanctuary's natural and cultural resources.
