Washed socks - atze

Interesting that you accuse others of being 'sock puppets' and your edits accuse others of not being 'real mappers' or that they have 'one edit'.

Did you know that half of wikipedia is done by people with 'just a few edits'.

Who is right?

best is to do a site visit.
failing that, add a 'fixme= is this actually here' tag and hopefully someone with local knowledge will fix it.

Don't you just love it....

It's silly to assume the 'My data is right everyone else is wrong' attitude.

Remapping is boring

I think your "Remapping" is really just copying someone else's work.

Copying the mapping of someone who has refused the new license isn't any different from copying stuff off of a google map from an open license point of view.

osm.org/browse/node/1508469663
osm.org/browse/node/312165847/history

From an openness point of view, the new map should be created without recently looking at the deleted map items.

Settlers Hills, Western Australia

OK.. Did a bunch of tracing. I left the roads as 'unknown' so it makes it easier for someone else to methodically name and tag. (found this out with Bamako tracing)

Settlers Hills, Western Australia

I found the zoomed in bing is out of alignment, while the zoomed out bing imagery is relatively accurate compared with gps tracks on the ground.
The thing that makes tracing things interesting are things like bike routes, pedestrian shortcuts.

A historical database

there is a place for historic place names (ie petra, atlantis, constantinople), but they'd be mapped as places with a historical names, or as ruins, or archeological attractions.

tandale

congratulations!

Lake Katherine

Bing'ed it for ya.

Lake Katherine

the lake is there in OSM osm.org/browse/way/134787660 so I suspect it is a temporary rendering glitch as it disappears at certain zoom levels.

How Many Times Must a Man Delete Something That Isn't There?

or detag it with 'note: this is not here any more'
sometimes armchair mapping is counter productive.

Check List

usually, people add a 'fixme' tag to things they think should be fixed in the future. Ie, you add half a trail.

http://keepright.ipax.at shows fixme tags, as well as common mistakes such as errors caused by bad imports.

There are several quality tools out there. osm.wiki/Quality_Assurance

I think there's also a site which highlights 'unmodified tiger import' so people know to check tiger imported data (usually, the nodes don't connect to manually added roads, or are low resolution)

How to deal with dirt roads?

If you can't use a normal car, then I'd tag it as a track. You don't want people in normal cars getting stranded because their GPS told them to drive on a dirt road. http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/04/stranded-woman-recounts-tale-of-survival

If you can use a normal car, then tag it as a road, surface = gravel or surface = dirt (potlatch has this in the simple editor)

There's some proposed 4wd tags.

4wd_only=yes

I'm back after a year away.

The GPS stopped working on my Alcatel.

Average tracks: drawing a "line of best fit" automatically

Cool!

Average tracks: drawing a "line of best fit" automatically

Does it work with more than 2 tracks? For two tracks, you have situations where one track is off due to a reflection off of a cliff face, so you're sometimes better off by picking the non reflected track.
