After hearing about Open Street Map I had a look at the web site and found that it was completely missing any detailed data for the area I live in!

So I thought I would rectify that and have a go at adding in some GPS tracking data for my local area. So far I have managed to do an initial road map for the Highlight Park area of Barry. It is still missing footpaths, house numbers and post code data - but it is a start!

I have found the quickest and easiest way to collect the GPS tracking data is by using my motorbike and my Garmin GPSMap60Cx. It is a bit weird though driving around up and down every street to get an accurate record on my bike - and I have had some odd looks from people :) It does not help that my bike is a large touring machine - not ideal for going up and down narrow dead end streets - but it quicker than a car, and more enjoyable too!

Hopefully I can find some more time to map other parts of the local area and get a bit more of Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan mapped over the coming months.
