Apps endanger OSM hosting by hammering the tiles servers

@dcp: I will decrease the tile traffic by 0% maybe 0.1%. The discussion is about the tiles and not the size of the database or api-traffic.

@amm: and without throttling MOBAC would be 50% and together with the other evil apps it will be 250% and that much will kill any hardware. :-)

Less than 10% is not really much, but still too much.
Even if MOBAC had it's own tileserver, the network problem is not solved.
Just wait a month or two and 1000 new users and it will be the same level.

I think the idea to send diffent UA for viewing and for bulk download is a good idea from openmaps (see http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2011-October/060336.html )

@Firefishy: And thanks for your work :-)

@Firefishy: is 73 tile request per second the peak or average?
How much in percent is 73 out of all tile requests?
Do you mean 73 tile requests per second from one user (one IP)?
Is it possible to lower the limits?

It will be difficult to find a solution, if everything is mixed up.

I have never paid 4EUR for an OSM-app. But in case I meet somebody who sells it, I will ask him to give his app out for free. The problem is, that in this case more people will use the mobile app and you will have more traffic.

Do you think OSM should get part of the money?
Why don't you ask for donations for the traffic problem?
Why is a free app better than a paid app?
For me it's better, because I don't have to pay, but for you?

For most people it is not obvious, that editing OSM is allowed but viewing is not allowed?
Is is ok, if I send a friend a permalink, so I can see where I live or where I have been or where some interesting location is? My friend is no editor.
But he will use his browser and not his mobile, so it's ok.

I am quite sure Google has more than one tileserver in more than one location.
Maybe OSM should look for tilemirrors. Which means also more traffic at first.

This is normal because OSM is growing and not only for editing but also for viewing. Blocking mobile apps just because they can be used for mass downloading is stupit. I used openmaps somedays ago and tried to load around 10 tiles and was blocked. So I had to switch to the mobile brower and loaded much more.

How to edit large ways?

This is not a way but a relation:
osm.org/browse/relation/1285132
To view it try also
http://www.openstreetmap.org?relation=1285132

Jemand hat die Relation Regionalpark Route (Rhein-Main) geleert

Jetzt bin ich etwas schlauer geworden.
Die vorletzte Version sehe ich hier:
http://api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/relation/27962/414

Europa AIO < 4GB

I think it can be done with gmaptool splitting the big file into tiles.
Than with MapSetToolKit combine and install for MapSource.
In MapSource select the wanted tiles (<4G) and transfer to device.

Europa AIO < 4GB

Garmin

JOSM can convert a gpx-track into osm-data for further editing.
But be careful, often it is better to draw and connect by hand.
Or just upload the track as gpx for somebody else to draw.

If you still want to do it. Rightclick on the gpx-layer and "convert to data layer". Than cut the track into pieces (roads) and "simplify way" to reduce the number of nodes. You still have to connect to other roads.

Garmin

mtb is for bicycle, not (car) driving.
Actually the program to convert OSM-XML-data into garmin is mkgmap.

Garmin

Have you looked at osm.wiki/Garmin
and osm.wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin and
osm.wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download ?
Do you need it in MapSource or just in you Garmin device?
Do you have MapSource running?

In the download-page there is a table of map-providers and a column indicating whether they support MapSource "Mapsource installer".

New account

Nice to see you again :-)

Floating Islands

My point was, that it is already possible and used to map walkable areas.
Router should assume that you can walk across any field that is mapped as area=yes and foot=yes.
www.openrouteservice.org can do it.
In the example there is a building in the walkable area, which is not walkable.

See
http://openrouteservice.org/index.php?start=8.673974,50.114579&end=8.672246,50.115322&pref=Pedestrian&lang=de&zoom=18&lat=50.11501&lon=8.67311&layers=TB000TFFTFTTTTTT

Floating Islands

May you can map it as an walkable area
area = yes
bicycle = yes
highway = pedestrian
like
osm.org/browse/way/34116206
?

Koordinate

Ich würde sagen, Doppelklick um die Position zu zentrieren und dann rechte Maustaste auf Permanentlink und "Copy link location"
Dann bekommst du sowas wie
osm.org/?lat=49.95451&lon=8.57215&zoom=15&layers=M
