Yes compared to this mess, the RER C around Paris (https://www.transilien.com/lignes/rer-trains/rer-C) is straight forward!
If the routes are stable enough, you can get the result of the Overpass queries and store them in the uMap, it will avoid the time out issue you have (you may be also tune the timeout you may have in the overpass request, not sure here, I haven't done dynamic Overpass requests recently).
Did you try osm.wiki/Overpass_API/Public_transport_examples to laugh at? ;-)
