I'm just curious, but do you make it a habit to delete other people's work wholesale and replace it with worse info? My traces of the Best Buy and Kuhn's buildings were correct. I live in this area, I visit those stores a lot. Their footprint was properly traced.... Sure, the other 'parts' of North Hill Village Mall needed to be added, but deleting valid data is not the way to go about it GeoKitten. The way that this mall was built makes it have several 'separate' buildings, even though it looks like just one. This did use to be an indoor mall in the '90s and earlier. Only in the past 15 years did they start taking out parts of it and replacing it with 'separate' parts that went all the way to the parking lot.

Oh, and before I forget, welcome to OSM!

I'm just curious, but what's the source for all the of business info you've been adding recently? I'm only asking because I haven't seen any mentioned on any of your changesets. Listing a 'source' is very helpful in allowing other mappers to know how you collected the data in case there's any problems with it (like tagging problems).

Is it possible that you could add a more detailed changeset comment as to what you're changing? Makes it easier for everybody to know what you're trying to do in the changeset. :)

Thanks. :) And welcome to OSM.

You're marking roads as 'one-way', yet you say in your changeset comment that they aren't one way? Isn't that a contradiction?

Unfortunately, Becker_MN_Import_Acc never did discuss the import with the community (either via the Wiki or talk-us/imports). He even got blocked (see: osm.org/user_blocks/596 ) for a short time because of the mass import. Some of the import he did in Charlotte even duplicated buildings traced by other users and several duplicated nodes in some areas. Clearly showing he wasn't verifying anything before importing it to the database here.

Do you know the names of the 'car wash' and 'car repair' places? We don't put what type of business they are in the 'name' tag as that's saved for the name of the business itself. They should be tagged 'amenity=car wash' & 'shop=car_repair' instead. That way, it at least allows the icons for those types of business to be rendered on the map.

Just so you know, we don't add the word 'restaurant' to the Subway name here in OSM. The officially go without that part. Thus, the name tag should just be 'Subway'.

sutton47, we don't add 'names' to houses that don't have real names. Thus, I've removed the 'name=housing' tags on all the houses you've added it to.

Northway Mall is still the official name for it. Signs up everywhere for it still.

Maybe submit a ticket over @ https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto for them to bump up the number of rendered characters by 3 or 4. I know 'ref=US 19 Truck" renders just fine, and that's 3 less characters then "ref=PA 5 Alternate".

29150977 over 10 years ago

Even for 'business' highways in PA, we don't abbreviate the text as 'bus' (just so Mapnik renders it), but spell it out fully.

29150977 over 10 years ago

Still, wouldn't changing the tagging for the OSM rendering (Mapnik) be considered 'tagging for the renderer'? There are other apps like routers that rely on the data in the 'ref' tag. Some of them might not understand the abbreviation and when speaking it, confuse the driver. That's why in almost every state we don't abbreviate these tags.

29150977 over 10 years ago

I'm curious, but why did you in this changeset (and others) change how the ref tag for PA 5 Alternate was tagged? In 99.9% of PA, we do it as 'PA # Alternate', not 'ALT PA #'.

30225004 over 10 years ago

btownbears, we don't add the word 'private' to the 'name' tag unless that's part of the real name. The 'private' tag would go in the 'access=*' part.

BTW, you might want to fix your changeset comments..

Can you please try not to have changesets that span the entire USA? It makes it hard to keep track of changes in Pittsburgh, PA when you do this as your changesets keep showing up in my RSS feed, even if you don't do changes here in my watch area. I would greatly appreciate if you could do this.

Hey Mike, I just noticed this changeset. However, you forgot to update the ref tags of the old route of US-127 that was bypassed and turned into US-127 Business. I'm fixing that right now. Just wanted to give you a heads up about that though.

abbafei, to be honest, I'm not sure that most of these changes should have been made. I-279 is clearly a bridge over Reedsdale Street, thus, I don't think qualifies for the 'covered=yes' tag.

On the wiki page itself for the 'covered=yes' tag, it says "When should NOT be used:

on a highway passing under a bridge, where the path of the under-passing highway may be accurately assumed."

That's pretty much the entire case here for all of your changes in this changeset. I would recommend a full revert of this changeset.

28318817 almost 11 years ago

I'm sorry, but I'm going to be reverting this changeset. This is very clearly setup as C/D (collector–distributor) setup here and what you changed to a 'motorway' are truly 'motorway_link' ways. These aren't mainline lanes, and don't deserve the main tag. I didn't touch any of your speed limit edits to these ways. The 'upgrade' has been reverted in changeset/29060533. changeset/29060533
