The Soundshell was once a focus of outdoor entertainment in the days when few had cars and most people were confined to town during weekends. It has small Maori motifs on the side and rear, and its interior is lit by lighting concealed behind the concentric louvres. (Concealed lighting was a new fashion in the 1930s.) The interior was originally oil-stained, for acoustic reasons, but has been painted since the 1950s with the colours on the circular fascia modelled on the original scheme."
