Improving the OSM map - why don't we? [7]

@leodobrasil See my nr. 1 example! Below the picture is the explanation with semicolons. You obviously missed it.

@Hendric Stattmann: I have never used Maproulette before, so I’ll give it a try, but have to find out how! Maybe it is something that might help. But as @SimonPoole noted, the problem is not the most important task we have to solve…

Thanks @Hedaja for the link to Jochen Topf’s blog! I didn’t know that. Seems that Jochen and I are concerned about the same.

@leodobrasil Making the permalink work with the User Pois is on my ToDo list!

The Renaissance of the fixme-tag ... via Osmand and overpass-turbo.eu

Hello Stephan!

With openpoimap (previously: taglocator) you have also the option of showing fixme’s!

Being a browser/desktop application, it was not designed in the first place to be used on a mobile device, but it does work!

Marc.

The town with the most toilets on the world!

With openpoimap it is even more striking! Openpoimap is a great tool to discover (and sometimes fix) this kind of data. I start developping it a few months ago and it has an increasing number of users. Especially useful to check if data you have entered on the map is correct.

Hi Alexandre,

Please reread the last two paragraphs of my post, because what you propose is exactly what has been done by someone, but then it was reverted by another person on the grounds that it was a mechanical edit.

@Warin61, @mcld,
When I’m travelling on my bicycle (sofar 100000+ km) I use my Garmin GPSmap62 to navigate. When I’m searching for something I need (hotel, restaurant, bicycle shop), the GPSmap shows me where those POIs are, but none of the other tags are visible. So, having no chain-tool is possible, but I cannot see on my Garmin map they don’t have one. Hence it should not be called a bicycle repair shop. Maybe I decide to take a detour to get there (having some problems with my chain) only to find out they can’t help me. In such a case I prefer no information over partial information.

Of course the precise definition of a Bicycle Repair Shop is still open…

(And I always carry a chaintool myself on my trips)

Escada, the point is that for every redundant tag (as is the case with the entrance key), programmers have to take into account every weird combination of tags in order to have the program work. But it is impossible to take all these combinations into account because one doesn’t know them all. In my next story I’ll show some of those.

The next link from taglocator shows the problem: http://mijndev.openstreetmap.nl/~marczoutendijk/openpoimap/taglocator.html?map=amenity&zoom=18&lat=60.16636&lon=24.9395&layers=B00FFFFFFFFFTFFFFFFFF

This church is shown with 3 markers because the entrance is marked in the deprecated way (building=entrance). The more inconsistency in the database the more problems show up when trying to get the data work for you.

Remember: Garbage In, Garbage out.

You missed my point Escada: a chain tool is very basic to a bicycle repair station. If they don’t have that tool, it is not a bicycle repair station!!
(A swimming pool without water, do you call that a swimming pool?)

OpenPoiMap - aka Taglocator

Because of a possible overflow (or a time-out) with large sets of data, you need this trick to do want you want do:

  1. Move the map to Ethiopia (it’s not necessary to see the whole country)
  2. In the User Pois field put this: {Ethiopia}tourism=campsite
  3. Hit the show button

You now must zoom in to the point where the blue/black bar at the top of the screen starts to spin. Wait till it stops and zoom out till you see the whole country. When I did that, I saw this:

Doing the same thing for all the Pubs in the UK might not work because of the huge number of Pubs!

Taglocator

Version 0.6 brings many improvements:

Icons replace the colored circles:

Popup with much more information and better layout:

Taglocator

Curently the version has now increased to Bèta 0.3b. There are many improvements (some are just on the softwarelevel) others are clearly visible. E.g. you can now set up your own tag selection and save/reload it as needed: User POIs in Taglocator.

Also the layout in the popupscreen has been improved: The name (when available) is now used as the heading for that poi, and links (both websites and wikipedia) are now in place links. I’m still working on more improvements. Please leave your comments here!

What can we do with "multipolygon relation"

Check this one too:

Happy New Year!

Taglocator

Thanks for your input @AndiG88. Especially a link to the wiki might be very useful. Adding indicators probably makes the tool a bit overloaden with features. I want it to be small and fast with no screen clutter.

Editing with Overpass and Level0

Indeed a helpful tool for some of the tasks we sometimes have to do!

gpx trace

Is this maybe of help:

osm.wiki/Track2osm

Also try a right mouseclick in JOSM on the gpx layer. I found this: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=3782

I’m being faced with the same problem but have not yet solved it.

A Proposal to improve the OSMF by Separating Out the Board from Officers

Please note that we now also have a forum here:

You probably can repost your message there also?

New users shouldn't be allowed to delete a lot of data

It’s my opinion that the layer with administrative borders shouldn’t be available at all to the regular mapper. When I started mapping I was really puzzled (and confused) by the idea that real things (like roads, mountains and rivers) could be connected to a ‘virtual’ world of borders. And at what point becomes a “new” user an “accepted” user?

So yes, I support your complaining, but I also plea for a non-editable layer of administrative (and other) boundaries.
