Changeset When Comment

To clarify when i say out of date i mean that whatever the substation was named after is long gone. the substations names never seem to get updated once assigned.

National Grid Distributions formerly Wester Power Distributions have been very reliable in adding a name and ref plaque to every ground substation. pole transformers can be hit and miss.

Admittingly the names can be very out of date since some of these substations could be closing on 100 years old now.

My view is that official_name only makes sense if there is a more common alternative name to take its place in the "name" tag. here there is none and there is no standard convention of using official_name instead of name with transformers and substations.
basically all substations and a lot of pole transformers have a plaque that lists its name and ref.

Hello,
Could you please refrain from changing name to official_name on transformers and substations. thank you.

Hello oglord, thank you for contributing to Open Street Map. Unfortunately License of Royal Mail's postcode finder tool is incompatible with Open Street Map and as such cannot be used as a source. As such i'm reverting this change.

Hi Jazz, The cycle lane on Van Road is not mapped correctly. cycle lanes should be mapped with a `cycleway:left=lane` tag on the road way and should not be mapped as a separate way just as separate car lanes are not mapped with separate ways. "left" can also be replaced with "right" or "both" if required. you can read more here on the wiki: cycleway=*

Adding "substation" in the name is a UK-wide standard.

Morning,
Unfortunately this is the first I've heard of the changes to power=circuit or the July proposal. I'll look into making the changes however the next grid is almost finished so i may commit that how it is. I'll also look into changing all previous grids.

Hello Jazz,
Following on from yesterday's comment. Could you please take greater care when adding crossings. many of the crossings you've added a number of "Marked Crossings" that should be "Unmarked Crossings". marked crossing as used for zebra crossings where the road itself is marked.

Please also take care not to add functional crossing like you've done in this changeset. a link footway described the situation accurately as it was.

good afternoon Jazz,
Just a small comment about some of the crossings you've been adding like this one way/1454697829. this should be a unmarked crossing with the tags `highway=crossing crossing=unmarked`. a marked crossing is used for zebra crossings.

Hi, I've changed it to shop to shoe_repair as you suggested. shoe_repair is not a perfect description for a cobbler but it does describe their primary business so i'm happy enough with it.

Hi jazz,
I removed the highway=path tag from this way as I was unable to find it during my survey a few days ago, as i stated in the note tag on the way. I've reverted this changeset.

Hi Jazz, I'm partially reverting this changeset, specifically the `incline` tags. `yes` is not a correct value for the `incline` tag, please see the wiki page here: incline=*

Hi there Jazz,
Thanks for contributing to OSM. I've taken the liberty to fix some of the mapping here. Both indoor mapping and multi-level mapping are quite advanced mapping topics so I would suggest you try to avoid them until you have more experience with OSM.

With the multi story mapping, the tag you was mostly missing is `level`. the downstairs area should have `level=0`. upstairs, `level=1`. Unfortunately ID, the OSM online editor, doesn't seem to support the level tag and doesn't allow you to filter by level like other editors which would make things a lot harder.

One other thing I wish to mention is to please avoid inventing paths. when mapping in the UK specifically, pedestrians are allows on all types of highway by default. so in situations where there is no separate path and the path simply ends are a road way then it should be connected to the road way directly. This allows the routers to direct pedestrians along the road way instead of them trying to find a separate path that doesn't exist.

One last thing I feel I should mention about mapping separate sidewalks as I seen you've done a few. Mapping sidewalks using separate ways instead of using the `sidewalk` tags is a very controversial and debated topic. What you've done is not wrong but some people wont agree with it. I tend to use separate sidewalks sparingly, usually where the sidewalks become complex like at a intersections for example.

Please feel free to ask questions you may have. I'm also active on the forums and on the osm discord. there are quite a few of us welshies on the discord so you'll be more than welcome. there also dedicate channels on there for people looking for mapping help which may be of use to you. I hope i havent scared you away with this mile long comment :)

Kind regards,
Kits

Hello Road Warrior, Can you please state your source for your recent changes? who are these users making these reports? what street views are you using?

Hi there Gary,
It doesn't appear to be widespread, affecting only affecting a couple of areas in this grid. honestly no idea why this happen. I've now delete them. Thanks for point this out.

Hi there.
Sorry to say but that's not correct. both names should be on all of the ways. since the Welsh name is dominant, it should go in "name" tag and the English name should go in the "name:en" tag. its up to the renderer which name gets displayed. for example, on this map it only shows English names when available.
https://openmaptiles.org/languages/en/#17.77/51.584364/-3.216985
I've now reverted it to its original name.
If you have any additional questions I would recommend asking on the forums or the discord. I'm active on both.
Kind regards,
Kits.

Hi there Storgar,
Why have you deleted the welsh name on this one section of this street?

173231534 3 months ago

Hello Turtlehats,
thanks for your contribution. Unfortunately I had to revert your changes. I'm not exactly sure what you were trying to map but you created a path on top of a already mapped track and moved a node incorrectly on joseph parry way.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. The forum is also a good place to go if you need any advice.

Kind regards,
Kits.
