Just checking — is this shop Penrith Carpet Centre (https://www.penrithcarpetcentre.co.uk/)? The name= tag should be that, if so, unless they are actually physically signed as ‘Carpet Shop’ outside :)

> it would have taken an unreasonable amount of extra effort to needlessly split this changeset.

With JOSM, that would only mean selecting subsets of the 14 items and using ‘upload selection’, it’s not much effort.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense, but it’s not what I asked :) I was asking if these roads could now be marked as complete and open to traffic? Presumably you surveyed the area to know about the signage at the entrance

No worries, there can be a bit of a steep learning curve to editing the map, so it’s appreciated that you’re putting the time in to improve it!

Is the main reception building the same one which has the campsite shop in (way/463401487)? Or the one next door which has the farm shop in (way/463401486)? Or a different one entirely? It’s been a few years since I was in Nether Wasdale so I can’t remember.

I agree it would make sense to have the bike hire node where they meet people for hire, rather than where the bikes are stored.

If you could make a note on Monday that would be grand :)

If there’s a speed limit on these newly constructed residential roads, does that mean construction is now complete?

Super, let me know if you have any questions.

One other thing which comes to mind if you’re going to be adding significant amounts of geometry (like this) is that you probably want to enable the OSMUK Cadastral Parcels overlay (in the Background Settings on the right) and ensure the aerial imagery is aligned to it before starting to add stuff, using the Imagery Offset settings further down that panel.

It looks like the alignment offset for Bing imagery here is 0,0, which is handy. But in other areas of the northwest it can be out by 1-2m. The offset of the aerial imagery changes every few years it’s updated, and it varies between different areas (even between neighbouring villages). The OSMUK Cadastral Parcels come from the Land Registry and are a source of ground truth for alignment (and also help with property boundaries where aerial imagery is unclear).

Hope that makes sense :)

Heya, thanks for adding detail to the farmland here. From the aerial imagery, it looks like a lot of this is unimproved grazing land (and I’d expect that of the area) — if so, it could be more specifically tagged as landuse=meadow meadow=pasture.

See osm.wiki/User:Gurglypipe/landuse for the current consensus on farmland tagging in NW England.

Hope that helps, happy to answer questions about if it it’s not clear, or if you have improvements to recommend.

@Harveeymaps I’d just like to say thanks for taking the time to update the map for things which you helped build, it’s fantastic to have this kind of local knowledge put on the map straight from the source :)

Hiya, thanks for your edits around the northern Lakes recently!

When editing footpaths/bridleways, please be careful to retain the existing access, designation and prow_ref tagging, which someone else has taken the time to add. This tagging is what records whether a footpath/bridleway is actually a legal right of way, and is used by route finding apps.

See osm.wiki/Access_provisions_in_the_United_Kingdom#Public_bridleways

I’ve re-added the missing tagging here in changeset/163723157

Happy editing :)

Hiya, thanks for your edits to improve bike hire round the Lakes :)

Do you know exactly which building Marra are in now they’re in Nether Wasdale? It would be useful to position the node for them on the right building so people can go to the right place. Either edit the map to tweak its location, or let me know which building’s right, if you know. Thanks!

This changeset includes modifications to the cooling towers of Didcot power station, in addition to all the edits on the Isle of Man.

The changes in Didcot would have been better as a separate changeset so this one doesn’t span half of England — see osm.wiki/Changeset#Geographical_size_of_changesets

Thanks! :)

I see from changeset/163444093 that you’ve now removed this NatWest (and kept the one on Market Square). Thanks for fixing that — I assume it’s based on a survey or local knowledge? You can list the sources for your edits in the entry just below the changeset comment, when saving an edit. It helps other mappers know where data has come from and how up to date it is, which helps inform future edits. You can also reply to changeset discussions (like this one) to answer questions or expand on your changeset comments.

Thanks again :)

Did you survey this?

163298621 10 months ago

Heya, thanks for all your edits recently.

I’ve tidied this up a bit in changeset/163304089, since there were some duplicate bank nodes and ATMs here on King Street.

However, there’s also a NatWest on Market Square (way/427303001), and that’s the only NatWest branch listed on their website (https://www.natwest.com/search-results/locator/branch.html?sortcode=601621&name=Penrith).

Are there really two branches of NatWest in the centre of Penrith at the moment? Or have they recently moved? Or something else?

I’ve not been in the centre of Penrith for a few months, so can’t remember myself.

Thanks :)

I don’t think you did. The speed limit and access around South Lodge and The Greaves were wrong. I surveyed them today and made changeset/163253770

Armchair mapping is fine for adding certain details on the map, but speed limits are not one of them. Please provide sources for your edits and stop armchair adding speed limits.

Have you surveyed this?

163012850 10 months ago

Hi, I’ve reverted this change (as changeset/163033751) because your ‘fix’ looks incorrect. The map previously had a bypass gate next to a cattle grid, which is a common rural road layout in this area. The gate allows horse-drawn traffic to bypass the cattle grid.

I’m not sure what maproulette issue you were trying to fix (it’s not mentioned in the changeset comment) but I don’t think this was the right fix.

Have you surveyed this area in person?

162871267 10 months ago

Yeah, agreed, I think it's been moved from the skate park a while back

Thanks for double-checking :)

I’ve gone with area:highway=forecourt in changeset/162887146, which I made up from scratch. I couldn’t find any examples of other people specifically tagging these areas, which is a bit odd. The best I found are various versions of service=forecourt, but those are only used on petrol station forecourt ways (https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1ZiF).
