Salut elfronto,

Merci!

Hi conifermapper,

Thanks for making that clear.

On OS OpenData StreetView a number of what you've marked as paths are actually cutlines in the forest plantation. These aren't intended as paths (I think they're for biodiversity, or fire protection, but not sure). I tried walking some of these in the Mynydd Du forest and they are impassible.

Given how hard going passing through forested land is, I'd argue for being very conservative about where we tag paths on the map. Unless supported by a survey actually walking the route, or a good handful of mutually corroborating GPS traces, I wouldn't support including them. Again (picking up a theme from the other discussion), from a navigational point of view I found it actively unhelpful to have so many paths in OSM.

Even the rights of way and paths marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:25k maps are often impassible now (after many decades of forestation) and I think OSM should aspire to be more accurate than those. So I'm minded to prune out a lot of the paths added on this changeset.

Kind regards,

Hi again conifermapper,

Thanks, that makes sense.

I'd make the case for tagging the upper reaches of this area as scrub, rather than woodland. When I walked it the other day the wood stopped at around the 300m contour. There are trees above, to about the boundary of the wood as you have it currently, but they're sparse and you can't find shade easily. To me 'wood' implies really thick tree cover. Certainly for navigation, I think showing such a large extent of woodland could be misleading if one were viewing the area from above, or from the valley opposite or alongside.

And since we have the scrub tag, we could show the difference. Ok if I make this change?

Kind regards,

Thanks, I've made a note to put walls in where I've seen them in due course.

Would you be averse to splitting the way anyway, to make it less unwieldy?

One effect of it being so long is that every time any fragment of it is amended (eg, by another fence being joined to it), the whole way gets a new version. So keeping track of the changes is difficult.

Hi,

Thanks that's helpful info. I might one day get around to moving them!

Since you're a regular editor of the area you might be interested in my note near Bal Bach on a similar topic:

Can't have too much info...

The caches might update slowly, but should now look like this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L5PAuf7HsyYqUC2_WIAjlxT6W0O7FTmH/view?usp=share_link

Any other refinements, feel free to say (or edit direct, obviously).

And thanks for kind offer!

Hi ianemitchell42, thanks for your edit.

Could I trouble you with some further questions?

1. Would I be right to infer a typo in the name of the farm? The building is marked "Gwerbybustach Farm" (with a B), but address given as "Gwernybustach, Forest Coal Pit" (with an N). This building here: way/998038829

2. There's a sign by a drive heading up to that building, indicating "Fforest Farmhouse". (Heading up the valley, the drivev is just before one with the vinyl banner signing Like Work But Different). Would I be right that the building currently named as the Gwe.. Farm is strictly Fforest Farmhouse?

3. If so, would I be right to infer that the whole of the campus is Gwe.. Farm, so we can add an area (like the one whose name you removed, showing light orange on the default view). I imagine something along these lines here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tBKUoCV81B7-QCcajpdvhDCEu9b2Ru35/view?usp=share_link

Finally, do you know the name of the farm that was erroneously tagged as Gwerbybustach Farm before your edit?

Many thanks for your help - I'm not local (but visit the area regularly), and local knowledge is the best thing for an accurate map!

Ah, in 2021 Geograph had "Church of St Issui" signed on the lychgate (Patricio being Partrishow in Welsh, and probably not part of the name).

Hi,

Thanks for your detailed changeset comment. As you surveyed the area, you may be able to help with my comment on my note here: note/4359949

In any case, re the name of the church: it does seem to go by many names (even before we mention the Welsh ones), but I wonder if it should really be "St Issui Church". The site you link to has "St Issui", which would be normal - (eg, St Mary's, St Peter's). Do you recall what it's called on the ground, since that is OSM default as I understand it?

Happy mapping.

Me again, conifermapper!

Intrigued by this enormous fence! Again, may I ask your source? As you walk up Crug Mawr from Partrishow it seems to be a wall.

Thanks, eteb3

Hi again conifermapper,

One last request for your source for the woodland added here.

I ask because in Cwm Bwchel above Llanthony the wood appears to come up the hill too high, based on my observations.

Thanks, eteb3

Hi conifermapper,

Similar question to my earlier changeset comment: could you please let me know the source for the peaks?

I ask because Crug Mawr is set off a way from the summit, and I think the same may be true of some others in this changeset.

Thanks.

Hi, You added the trig point at Crug Mawr with height 558.

Do you remember your source for that figure? Thanks.

Hi Conifermapper,

On this changeset you added a lot of paths. Could I ask what your source for these was?

Thanks,
