Mazda05’s reverts aren’t vandalism - they follow the community consensus in Ukraine. A lot of similar edits from the users whose changes Mazda05 reverted look more like attempts to push propaganda than real mapping. OSM should stay neutral and not be used for that.

Second, regarding transliteration: while I understand that Ukrainian authorities recommend a specific system for transliteration (e.g., the 2010 Cabinet of Ministers Decree), OpenStreetMap has its own established tagging practices. The name:en tag is meant for established names in English, not transliterations. If a name is simply the Ukrainian name written in Latin letters, the proper tag for that is name:uk-Latn.

This is a global convention in OSM, not just a local preference. Using name:uk-Latn maintains clarity and allows for proper multilingual support. If a consensus emerges in the Ukrainian community to expand this to other object types like rivers or stations, that would be great — but until then, manually adding transliterations to name:en may create confusion.

Antimuscovy, actually, in general it’s not recommended to do transliteration manually in OpenStreetMap. But even if you do, it shouldn’t go into the name:en tag. Use the name:uk-Latn tag instead — it more accurately describes this kind of data. “Hlyniana” is still a Ukrainian name, even when written in Latin script. Most likely, there is no actual English name for this object.

Finding such errors is a difficult task after wars of edits. Unfortunately, the massive automatic changes made by avinet_ua and DWG's reverts made a lot of mess in the data. In fact, the main damage was done to the data in Ukraine.

Simply copying the `name` tag to `name:uk` without any modifications is not appropriate. Consider this example: the primary `name` tag is `McDonald's`, which is used because the signage at every McDonald's in Ukraine is in English. The `name:uk` tag is `МакДональдз`, reflecting the Ukrainian version found on their website and in advertisements. The `name:en` tag remains `McDonald's` because that is the English name.

If a name does not have a Ukrainian equivalent, it should not be arbitrarily translated or transliterated from the Latin script.

Moreover, any automated changes to these tags should first be discussed within the community. Without community approval, such edits may be subject to reversal by reviewers, who would be justified in doing so.
