Just a couple of minor corrects

Posted by cybercrypt on 17 October 2009 in English.

Fixed a few inaccuracies in some edits to The area around Tara (QLD, Aus), Some service roads (read Night Soil Collection laneways) re tagged. Correct me if I am wrong, as these are un-named and non-improved surface.
Also re- tagged another way to walkway, as that is more than what it is.. basically an easement for possible future way. Still have to name one of the streets I marked a few weeks ago.. I hope no-one is depending on it for their GPS ;)
Hope to get back to the survey of Chinchilla with in the month, may get a bit of Cecil plains done this weekend.. just to complete what others have added to my initial attempt.

Looks like I will be on JOSM in the next few days, time permitting, just hope I have not been spoiled by the near 12mths on POTLATCH

At short notice I had a trip to Tara, first opportunity in a year to survey the area..

Managed 99% of the towns streets was able to correct the Surat Development road from the Moonie Hwy to Tara,(Previous was from Yahoo - as was most in that area) as well surveyed tara-Kogan road and Kogan-Warra Road.. just have to tidy the map now.. Now to add a few of the local services..

The Yahoo imagery is not that good for this part of the world, I was surprised with the low errors with the main roads (luck and a little local knowledge)

My next out of town survey will be a quick trip to chinchilla.. I don't expect much time to drive or walk around.. but hope to add a few more streets - I think I am only 20% mapped there atm. and really need to add a few of the local services..

BTW: It is annoying that an error can display on the tile servers in less than an hour, but the correction will take more than a week?

Map editing

Posted by cybercrypt on 27 September 2009 in English.

I do wonder if some users who are editing the map in this area, have local knowledge?

I made a comment a few days ago about using the ABS data to mark rivers and roads and my concern that checking of the data was not being done.. ie checking that the ABS boundary is in fact following a river and not a road? and I agree with fellow mappers that using ABS for rivers is super handy.

Well today I notice a correction I made a few days ago was undone.. and worse now the ABS boundaries are mislabeled.. I won't bother fixing..

My rant is about, NOT checking the effect of changes.. and a warning about using ABS data for roads.. Is it not better to have GPS survey and local knowledge?

Multi Tagging

Posted by cybercrypt on 23 September 2009 in English.

Not a great fan of of multi tagging a Way. But it has it's uses WITH CAUTION.
My Comment is targeted in particular at the practice I have noticed of Tagging an Administrative Boundary as a River, or Highway.
As A river.. it is a darn quick and easy way of placing many KM of stream and river data onto the MAP.. BUT.. PLEASE Check what is being marked. The Admin Boundary's Also Follow Roads.. And if your naming the rivers.. be careful that the 2 rivers don't merge and the boundary doesn't follow the joining stream..
As for the tagging a Admin Boundary as a road.. Well the boundaries can be better than 30 years old, or follow the Commonwealth/state Land Corridor for the road.. THE ROAD MAY NOT BE THERE.. certainly makes it difficult when you survey a road and need to move it the 10, 100m or more.. you know make the road follow it's current course and not look like the crappy google maps.

On the subject of Google Maps... I play here on OSM because the Google maps for my area of the world is WRONG.. well has a lot of errors. we can bring a map that is not only open source but has the stupidities removed.

Am I trashing anyone with these comments? well 90% is directed at myself as a reminder..
I will be pleased when i am back in an environment where I can use JOSM again.. that is on my PC and My network..

A Tidy up and more back roads

Posted by cybercrypt on 19 July 2009 in English.

I start this entry with a question..
Is there an Auto conversion of Mini roundabouts to a drawn round Way? or is someone converting them manually? I noted a number of Dalby "Mini roundabouts" have been either converted to Diamond or hexagonal shapes.. With a couple of the intersections deleted completely with HOLES in the affected ways on the map.

I hope that this isn't happening else where.. It is very disappointing to spend months improving the accuracy and detail on this area.. only to have a a script or new feature destroy the work.
I am sure it wasn't a person, as many try their best and at least fix their errors.. scripts are neat but not smart..

My next feat will be to get the tags all correct.. Have only been focusing on getting the ways down.. prob should have started with putting it all down first.. oh well.. the devil is in the detail..

Someone commented after my last entry about the back roads.. being a difficult or not a quick and simple task.. NOT WRONG THERE.. 2 weeks and I am lucky to have surveyed 10km in the local area, and the same in the western areas of the shire.

Aus, QLD - Dalby 99.99% at last

Posted by cybercrypt on 5 July 2009 in English.

Went for a short drive this afternoon. The new estate of "Flemington gardens" is now open to vehicular traffic. So my chance to map the newest housing estate in the town.
Other than a need now to go back and re-survey some areas of the town to check the accuracy of my work I can now say that the township is 99.9%.. until the next estate gets started or a stage 2 or 3 or 5..
I am now moving my focus to the many country roads.. but not so sure as to how much will be done before I move to my next job.
A quick trip to see our new grandson next week will see a chance to add to the towns of Miles, Chinchilla and Wandoan.. with these it is now side streets and out of the way roads.. I hope to improve on some of the ways created from the "Yahoo" imagery - shocking resolution - not even good for marking Rail lines and Airports, let alone roads or - dread - streets..
