To check the legal status of a right of way i sometimes look at the council’s definitive map of rights of way site. I can’t supply a link as each county and sometime area as it’s own site. Another easier source is Barry Cornelius’ site, but that data is not quite so up to date. This data is in KML format and can be displayed over Google Earth or with GPS Prune on OSM. I find walking and surveying are even more relaxing, sometimes the aerial is out of date so it is safer to go and look first. I agree with your girlfriend polygons with shared nodes are a real pain. Happy mapping

I been mapping footpaths along with some other stuff for several years now. This is the best walkers version of OSM i have seen so far and it will display a GPX excellent! it’s clear with good contrast and contours as well. I then noticed that there are Garmin files as well I have just downloaded a GB one for my Oregon 450, the download was quick ( 5 minutes or so ) and seemed to be unzipped automatically? is it was already an .img file . i have put that and the contours on the a micro SD and that looks fine and clear ( is doesn’t have lots of dark coloured backgrounds which a lot of versions have which are bad for viewing ways and routes). I have realigned Arlon Lane, and lengthened it a little using potlatch2 editor and bing. It is quicker to edit the map than to write a diary entry. have a look at the guides to learn how. happy mapping. osm.wiki/Beginners%27_guide

I use a Garmin Oregon 450, and like you, i would like an OS lookalike. I have only used prebuilt OSM on Garmin maps. I have looked at Pinns Devon 50k OS lookalike and hope to try to get to grips with OSM map builds and typ files. I would be interested to hear a bit more detail of your building process and the tools you use. I have not seen the unnamed/other label with any of the downloads that I have used on my GPS. I have used a purchased OS map which isn’t routable and a OSM one that is, both selected on the one device. The OS as an higher draw order and is displayed over OSM but routing, and ETA, distances and the route are highlighted and the data shows in four boxes that i usually display. If i put the map pointer on a road, or object often the road name or other name ( from OSM data) will pop up.

A nice place to map. I discovered, stayed at, and mapped a nice organic campsite close to Cirencester a few years ago when i joined a group of friends in the town. We walked thirty or so miles of the Macmillan Way and I added some stuff there also. Thanks for reminding me. And Happy Mapping

I notice that you have been mapping for six years and have made over a couple of hundred edits. You record and upload GPX traces. You have the skills and tools and can use the city cycle map as a todo guide. You have a great project exploring, surveying improving OSM Enjoy! I have been doing a similar “job” walking and mapping some of the thousands of miles footpaths that exist within an hours drive of Huntingdon near Cambridge in the UK. It’s great getting out and about in the countryside and villages ( often with Ramblers walking groups ) chatting, exploring, Jpeg-ing tracing GPXes then updating OSM when i return home. I like to map construction sites of roads and buildings, If we do the ones nearby we can be ready when they are complete. Local people can also see whats going to change. I lived in Durvigutum ( Godmanchester ) for most for my first thirty years, Godmanchester was a junction of quite a few roman routes one that goes south to Sandy isn’t even a footpath for much of it’s route now, Ermine street as also been obliterated for a spell in the Stamford area, I guess the land owners didn’t want visitors. There’s a Bullock road which runs parallel to the A1 near Sawtry that was used by drovers, to avoid the toll, I was told. Some livestock needed “boots” as their feet weren’t up to long walks. see link. Via is often part of the name and is on the street signs. I means “ the way to “ and is very common in Italy but is also seen in several countries. It is possible to contact the mappers of errors or possible errors directly instead of leaving notes in the data, while using Josm or Potlatch2 editors by ( or via !!) email. I was guilty of not connecting the ends of dirt footpaths ( rights of way in the UK) in my early mapping. I was contacted and informed that connecting end node allowed route apps to work. Dirt paths shouldn’t be deleted just because they are dirt, many in the UK are the legally recorded rights of way. Happy Mapping

Maybe you could in future give the trace the roads name and it’s class. I do realise that for lots of short roads that may not be too practical.
