Hi Jeremy,
Clare Street is signed as a "shared road" (this article shows the sign: http://tomhawthorn.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-to-be-good-neighbour.html). This matches the OSM definition of "living street". Here's the OSM Wiki article on that tag: highway=living_street. We don't have many of these around Greater Victoria, but I have seen this one and one out in Colwood.

I'm not sure about Brighton, though. I'm skeptical that just that one section of it was signed as "shared road", so an on-the-ground survey might be needed to confirm how much of it (if any) should be tagged as living street.

Hi Dima179,
I'm confused why you think that. The rest of the E&N/SVI is tagged as usage=main, so this portion at the one end shouldn't be any different. The entire line is over 200 km long and is definitely a main line (with a branch to Port Alberni).

I noticed in this changeset (as well as 112163892), you changed a Thrifty Foods location to Sobeys. While Sobeys bought the chain in 2007, the stores have remained branded as Thrifty Foods. It's a very longstanding local brand, so I'm pretty sure there would be quite a bit of media coverage if the stores were being rebranded, but I can't find anything. Are you sure these are now Sobeys? I can swing by one of these when I'm out tomorrow, but I'm almost certain these are still Thrifty Foods.

Highway 4 officially starts at the 19 interchange, and this is supported by the signage, so it shouldn't be extended as far as the Rupert Road roundabout.

The section of road between Rupert Road and Highway 19 is officially named "Memorial Avenue", though the signage seems to be inadequate.

The "Alberni Highway" name is carried by Highway 4A, so only the part of Highway 4 west of the 4/4A intersection (Coombs Junction) should carry this name. The section from Coombs Junction to Highway 19 may actually be "Memorial Avenue" officially based on some sources, but "Route 4" signage at the EB exit 60 intersection contradicts this, so I've given it the generic name "Highway 4" to match other highways in BC.

Hi Computron,
I noticed a few of the objects you moved in this changeset are now no longer aligned with the CRD 2019 imagery (which I used to map many of these objects initially), and I'm wondering if you might have an offset in place for that imagery layer in JOSM. By comparing the CRD imagery to the known coordinates of high-accuracy geodetic benchmarks, it's already very well aligned across Victoria, so an additional offset isn't required. An alternative is the Bing imagery, which was recently updated with August 2020 data and is very good quality. For Bing, I found that an offset of 2.09; -0.60 aligns it with both benchmarks and the CRD 2019 imagery across the region.

Happy mapping!
Andrew

Something can be both a building and attraction, and Butterfly Gardens definitely qualifies for this. I've restored the tourism=attraction tag (it had already been tagged as building=yes when I mapped it in 2012).

I thought this had only recently been approved and that nothing had been built yet. The Sooke site (https://sooke.ca/district-services/departments/parks-and-greenspaces/multi-use-sports-box/) says site prep may just be starting now. Is this wrong and the park is already complete? If nothing has been built yet, at best this should be mapped as a construction site. If they haven't even started site prep, then it shouldn't be on the map at all.

I don't understand why you make such changes in order to fix minor issues. I reverted this changeset and then only had to remove one way from a relation to fix the issue. If you're going to police the world for these types of issues, please take the time to fix them properly.

Whoops, that was an embarrassing spelling mistake. Thanks for fixing that!

You surveyed more than 8000 mailboxes across Canada and determined that they're all named "Canada Post Community Mailbox" (when I didn't think mailboxes had names)? You've also singlehandedly replaced all instances of the long-standing tag type=cmb in favour of a tag with far lower usage. This is clearly a mechanical edit and needs to be reverted. A change like this needs to be discussed first.

Hi Clement1950,
This change converted the country of Canada into a bus stop. I assume this was an accident. I've reverted the changeset, which restores Canada to its previous state.

Salut Clement1950,
Ce changement a converti le pays du Canada en un arrêt de bus. Je suppose que c'était un accident. J'ai annulé le changement, qui rétablit le Canada dans sa forme antérieure.

Please don't. Fictional names don't belong in the main database.

I agree that it's odd, but this one actually does. There's a set of three cables that runs along the south side of the towers from east to west. When they reach the tower at the east side of this changeset bbox, these three cables split off to a separate tower (the one deleted here). From that tower, they extend down to the ground. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that they either then run underground to the water disinfection facility to the northwest, or they're for some kind of grounding. I guess it would have been more accurate to extend the way beyond that last tower and tag the termination point at the ground, in order to provide more context for this unusual situation.

Hi BGJones,
I mapped a number of the trails in this part of the park, and the unofficial ones don't have any signage indicating that bikes or horses aren't allowed on them. That's why I had tagged them as "path", which indicates a trail where the designated uses aren't known or don't exist. I think it's good to keep the distinction between those trails which are considered "official" and have signage indicating the permitted uses, and those that are unofficial and unsigned with no clear permitted or prohibited uses. With the current tagging of "footway", that indicates a trail that is explicitly designated as being for foot traffic, which isn't true for the unofficial trails. What do you think?

I wondered that myself when I got home and went to add it. I drove past there again yesterday and confirmed that the signage says exit 7, despite that being out of order. I wonder if someone will notice and change the signs eventually.

I've removed the opening_hours from this gate. The hours on Mosaic gates vary depending on the time of year, and there are also stretches of the year where it will be closed 24/7. The note that led to this changeset was likely an improper use of notes and was intended for sharing with someone else, not as a source for editing OSM data.

92168816 about 5 years ago

This changeset undid recent changes and moved objects to where they were a few years ago, and also added a playground where none has ever existed. I've now reverted it.

I now realize that you're remotely "fixing notes" all across Canada with no local on-the-ground knowledge. Please don't do this. Cases like this demonstrate why local knowledge is required. Now that I realize that you're blindly making changes based on notes, rather than actually visiting to confirm the current situation, I'm going to go back and revert your change that I questioned on the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena. I'm also going to look carefully at your other changesets in this region to make sure they didn't also make undesirable changes.

Please leave notes to be investigated by the local contributors, because they're the only ones who have the full picture.

Thanks! It was a combination of water and waterway data from CanVec, road and landcover/landuse tracing from aerial imagery, and road names from BC logging road data.

91729869 over 5 years ago

These addresses are all abbreviated and in all uppercase. They need to be converted to match the street names in OSM.

91726997 over 5 years ago

It looks like these were imported directly with no changes to use OSM tags. There's nothing tagging them as streetlights and all of the foreign tags are still there.
