| Understanding How Others Map Roads and Rivers | You can find details of things on the OSM wiki. Use it. But do think about what it says .. sometimes it does not make sense and then you should ask questions. As alway .. if you cannot make it out .. don’t tag it, leave it for others to add the detail. Where you can see a bridge, map it layer = 1 .. so it goes over the river bridge = yes .. generally, details ? bridge=* If it is not a bridge, then it could be a ford or a culvert. A ford is where the river goes over the road - same layer so that does not need to be tagged. But if the river is a simple way then the ford should be a single node that both the river and highway share - and then tag the node as ford=yes. Only when the river has mapped river banks do you need to map the extent of the ford as part of the highway using a segment with the tag ford=yes. See ford=* If a culvert .. it is the river that goes into the culvert .. so tag that layer=-1 (goes under the road, some think that the river is actually layer=0 and the road should be tagged layer=1) tunnel = culvert |

| Remote mapping of boules/petanque areas in Malaysia | Congratulations, pitches can be hard to find and even harder to identify the sport played. Imagery will never be up to date, at least not without paying lots of money for it. So for new things local surveys are required. |

| You thought OpenStreetMap data uses the WGS84 datum? No it doesn't! | Usually when adding data there will be other data that is already in OSM. The imagery can be shifted to match the data already in OSM and then the imagery can be used without causing too many problems. If the data already in OSM is wrong and you add new data that demonstrates this shift then the resulting map will show this as a distortion between the two data sets giving an incorrect impression of the land scape. This to me is worse than having the entire map shifted by some meters as most would accept that shift as being an error that is easily allowed for. ‘Exact coordinates’ can be had from trig points, state survey marks and a number of other places. But you need to know everything about the survey - when it was done, to what accuracy, to what datum etc etc and that should be avalible together with the location information. If that extra data is not avalible then it is not an ‘exact coordinate’. |

| I think I did something useful | Hi, Thank you for correcting the path through the minefield! Unfortunately there are those who don’t like OSM containing data about hazards for various reasons. Land mines in north western Africa for instance. Dangerous suburbs in South America. OSM does not map them. Personally I’d map them. Most of the people who object have not been to those areas. Most of the people who want them mapped have been to those areas. While the extent may not be objective I would simply extend the area to ensure safety. If someone then goes into that area they have a warning which is better than no warning at all. |

| Help required for adding access information to track roads | I don’t think driveways are seen as access=public. Possibly access=destination? Other areas of the world? Some remoter places ? Some ‘driveways’ have more ‘agricultural use’ than ‘living’. Some places have the mail delivered by plane.. once a week, together with some groceries. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-06/great-australian-flying-outback-mail-service/9701182 Garbage trucks? No. These places have there own dump for garbage. Amazon, DHL, FedEx etc etc.. no .. they simply don’t get to these places.. they have to go pick things up ..usually they go by plane, there own small private plane. Just as most people learn to drive, people out here tend to learn to fly. |

| Help required for adding access information to track roads | Where there is no access tag the default value, I believe, is access=yes. So any tag of motor_vehicle=yes would be redundant. Any tag of motor_vehicle=delivery/destination would be adding a restriction. The tag highway=track is used by many for any small unpaved roads. If it truly is a driveway then it should be ok to change it to highway=service, surface=unpaved, service=driveway. However some of the ‘driveways’ here can be 100 km long .. I have tagged those highway=unclassified, surface=unpaved, access=private. Note the surface tag, if desired a width tag could be used too. I would be very hesitant about changing these if they are already mapped. Adding new ones, ok, make our best decision based on what you have. |

| Worst mistake: straightened and upload | We do lean best from our own errors. I too have lost work due to my own errors. As PlaneMad says - use the undo feature (^Z) to step back, if you want you can also step forwards (^Y) to see the changes. Unfortunately this ability is lost once JOSM is closed. |

No it doesn't! | Until GPSes and phones start using plate tectonic references there will be no consumer demand for anything other than WGS84/WGS84 like references. And, as you point out, the differences are too small for consumers to recognize above the error of their equipment. So technically correct, but of no use to the majority of users. Eventually I would like to see OSM move to plate tectonic references. But it will not happen soon. |

| Tennis court surfaces | I use grass and paved. Not seen a clay court … I have seen concrete and asphalt used as a surface tag for tennis courts in the data base. Not certain what ‘carpet’ might mean for wikipedia but most people will think of the carpet in homes. I think some think like ‘artificial_turf’ might be more appropriate. To me hardcourt says the same as paved. I would not use hardcourt. |

| Upgrading Transjakarta Networks to Public Transport V2 Schema | Hi, Thanks for your efforts with PTv2! Some comments on relation/9370447 - Transjakarta Corridor 8 Some of the stops don’t appear to be on the route. The circular bit of the rout in the south is not well done. Way: TransJakarta Busway Koridor 8 (428443864) needs to be split so Way: TransJakarta Busway Koridor 8 (512756020) can correctly connect to it. Take a look at my diary entry @Warin61/diary/45106 for my thoughts on how to do it - the minimum requirements. | Editing of Maps | HI, Quick changes can be done, once you learn the basics. So you have to learn. Similar to any other thing there is a requirement for the operator to have some knowledge. If you don’t put in the work then you will not be able to contribute fully. The more detailed OSM becomes the more there is to learn. If you are only interested in one subject you can concentrate on it and then ignore the rest. Most people start doing a little bit. And then see something else they want to do .. and so over time some develop in ways they never intended. Others drop out. Now the part that is out of OSM control. Once these changes are made it takes time for the map makers to make a new map and distribute it. Some of these operate on a schedule, one schedule is one year between updates. So if a road is closed for a day or a week or a month it make little sense to put it in their map. Others update daily… but do their map users? In short, while well intentioned, short term changes don’t really work well. u. You will find similar things occur in other areas. Where you chose to spend your time is up to you, find something you enjoy doing. If it is not OSM that is fine. |

| Newbie | Hi, Rozinha2019 your profile is here @Rozinha2019 .. if you click on “EDITS” you will see your present edits .. arr I see you have found that, good. The way in which things work .. is like learning to drive a car. The basic concepts are all the same from one car to another .. once you have learnt those it become easier to use a different car/app. The names tag should only be used for real name. For things like ‘small house’ use the description key -e.g. description=small house. The editors only have a certain number of presets but allow you to use things they don’t have .. the description key might be one that iD does not have (yet). OSM constantly evolves -ever changing .. that annoys some but makes adding new stuff a little easier. The OSM wiki can be helpfull, but use your own thoughts when reading it.. for the description key -description=* There is a lot in mapping. Enjoy. |
