Some Accounts Made Many Crossing Ways and Buildings at OSM Data in Jakarta, Indonesia

Hi, Looking at Anjar Example 1 … There is now a road going through 2 buildings .. these buildings were added by the HOT team as Way: 505450991 and Way: 505451322 with source tms[22]:http://imagegeocenter.org/image/rest/services/IndonesiaHOTJan2017/MapServer/tile/{z}/{y}/{x}

That source looks to be as fuzzy as Digiatal Globe premium/ERSI world image clarity .. and all with the same or at lest a very similar offset!

And those buildings … well I cannot see them. So I don’t think they exist … a HOT error. The road going thorough the buildings looks to be real, and probably by one of the mappers that this posting is complaining about.

If you want me to examine any other specific examples .. please specify the way numbers .. pr a changeset number … rather than a screen shot of an area.

Woolaston

I’d think the grounds around a house may be better described as a garden - so leisure=garden, access=private?

Bing imagery

In some areas of the world the Bing imagery is blurred, whereas the DigitalGlobe Premium imagery is not. A trick with overzooming is to turn off loading new tiles … this gets around the DigitalGlobe Premium imagery white tiles.

I would very much prefer the imagery to be different between the different sypliers - it helps with things like cloud cover.

That's weird the Premium DigitalGlobe imagery

Cheat. Turn off auto load tiles etc and you can use the 100m tiles at 50m. Remember to turn the tile loading etc back on to get more tiles.

Possibly the dates of the different photos reveal building work?

Arizona Eastern Railway

Hi Maybe enter it in ‘open historic map’ there are start and end dates … some how make them match the names? osm.wiki/Open_Historical_Map

Good luck. Mine so far have been one start and end date .. but it must be possible to have various rebirths.

Pyrenees Mountain Range Trail

Hi … Not certain what you want to achieve with this entry? Is this cycle route present in OSM? Is this cycle route well mapped in OSM?

Custom Area (Orphanage grounds)

Buildings as ways with tag building=* see osm.wiki/Buildings

Recreation areas ? .. what do you mean? These are sports areas? Then sport=* Parks ? then leisure=park.

Orahanage - as a way on the outer area then tag social_facility=group_home social_facility:for=orphan see social_facility=*

How are you "supposed" to map landuse?

Careful! Do not assume that an area of trees means the land is used for forestry. For an area of trees you can map landcover=trees (and use ‘natural=wood’ for the renders … though it may not necessarily be ‘natural’ in some way).

What about a dessert area? The land may not be ‘used’ at all .. landuse=vacant? Or it may be ‘used’ as a a reserve of some description. Unless you know then it is best left blank as far as landuse goes. It is easy enough to use satellite imagery to add residential areas and some farmland, commercial and industrial areas to the map for landuse. It needs local information to map landuse=forest.

How to track and encourage contribution?

@ Viajero Perdido … patience.. The tile rendering takes time .. and your request is probably in a queue. Add the regular updates and the queue can be quite long. I usually wait a day. As there is a lot to do .. I simple move to another task/area and work on that.

How to track and encourage contribution?

Never tried to ‘track my progress’, never felt the need. Some of my edits I do for forthcoming trips, those I do want to have impact on the resulting map that I use. Some of my edits are to fix errors - those I don’t track other than checking that I have actually ‘fixed’ them. My encouragement is using the map for myself, improving the map for others and hearing and seeing others use the map. The map has been made by many hands, my contribution is small.

A correction; “How it looks — rendering problem? There are several map maKERS using OSM data .. which one did you chose? “

Possible source? http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ ?? That has a few rendering options to select from. But I think your screen/colour problem is more likely to be with the GPS settings … Good Luck finding it .. they don’t make things easy.

— Side note … I also occasionally use http://alternativaslibres.org/en/downloads.php mainly for an error source for correcting OSM data.

OSM is the data used by map makers to render (make) the map.

How it routes – OSM problem? Possibly the other roads are not ‘connected’ to the other roads, or have not been entered into OSM , or have some characteristic to dissuade their use (access=private for example). As I’m a long way away and have no interest I’m not investigating - enough to do in ‘my’ local areas.

Some problems of Russian forum

Old soccer ‘rule’, “Play the ball, not the man.”

For forum use and here .. it means comment on the object, not the person.

Someone broke that ‘rule’ by mentioning the developers rather than sticking to ‘his’ (his in an ownership sense rather than a personal sense) subject that maps.me did not render certain thing/s.. And it deteriorates from there …

If you manage to keep persons out of the discussion then things will be a lot better. You can see how difficult it is by my use of “his” above .. I could replace it with ‘the’ and not get ‘personal’! But for demonstration I have placed it there so you can see that the person is not relevant .. and can be left out entirely if ‘you’, the writer, are careful.

Note: Do what I say rather than what I do .. I too have fallen into the trap .. very easy to do! Just so easy to generate unintentional ill feeling.

Lavander Ct is spelled

Oh .. forgot .. you’d need ‘source:alt_name’ to state that too if you add the tag ‘alt_name’.

It may be “instructive’ to add a tag ‘comment’ about the spelling of the street name so any mapper looking at it can see your concerns over it.

Lavander Ct is spelled

Hi, Welcome to OSM. I too see you have changed the name. The way is nicely visible with its tags using way/11195965 and clicking on ‘view history’ on the bottom of that page gets you way/11195965/history

You can see from the history that the name spelling has been changed several times using different sources. If you have seen the street signs on the ground then that source should override any remote import source. However you do need to state that source .. using the tag ‘source:name’ - change it to indicate what you used .. ‘personal survey’? Or what ever you used. Don’t leave it set to what ever the last person used.. as that will get the past spelling.

It may be possible that the street sign at one end has a different spelling than the sign at the other end! In which case I’d use the tag ‘alt_name’. Stranger things have happened.

My suggestion on OMS

I suggest that Jason should introduce applications on all platforms.

Long Names of OpenStreetMap

@ I_G Yes, putting a description in a name tag is bad practice.

“name=* tag is supposed to contain solely name, not to describe the type or location of the object or one of its other properties (such as height, elevation, operator, access restrictions, classification/certification/quality labels…).” from name=*#Additional_data

Use the description tag description=* !

Mapping Baseball Fields

Ok… devils advocate hat on here …

a) What is the ‘entire field’?

b) OSM maps ‘what is on the ground’. So is the ‘pitch’ (“whole area of play”) the on the ground area where the ball is ‘in play’?

The message is .. you know what you mean, but I don’t. You’ll need to really describe what you mean so I and others don’t misinterpret it. And the description should be easy to translate into other languages.

Linear barriers

The ‘real width’ would be similar to the ‘real width’ of the road … Some are single lane width, some on main roads are two lane… three might be wider ones but I do’t recall them.

As the road width is not rendered it does not matter so much.
