FWIW: The park alliance map has it as White Island.

Is there an extra "no" in that description?

Agree that W103 is a mess on the block btw Broadway and WEA. I expect it will stay that way until the renovation project on the north side of the street is done, which... next year?

Speaking as an inline skater, I can give you lots of gory details. But #BikeNYC peep would know more about this spot.

This is a bridge on the park path that crosses over Amtrak. The bridge is wood, wood beams and plywood, and some years ago, it was in terrible shape and was closed. (There was certainly a streetsblog article about it.) It was repaired not too long after (which in NYC these days means within a year, maybe). It was okay last time I rolled this way, which was a few years ago.

I don't go this way anymore because the overall path from river level up to alongside the parkway can get really steep and really scary.

Just tried using the C for combine action amidst some changes that affected the SE corner of Broadway and W114. Not sure if it worked, so I didn't try updating the NW and SW corners the same way.

Of course it would be something simple like that.

I think the ones I was messing with were marked as street crossings from one sidewalk intersection to another, and I was lopping the bits that were actually on sidewalk and marking them as being sidewalk. Is there a better to do that without ending up with little lines that represent all of 3 feet of sidewalk?

This is in the OSM Wiki indicates a known issue but not yet settled.
osm.wiki/New_York_City#Honorary_Street_Names

The text there was only added this past February, so I guess it's still evolving.

As an example of a co-name I'd never heard of until last year but which the city uses to some extent, the corner of Broadway and 116th is "Barnard Way". I first saw that used by NYC DOT in announcing neighborhood street resurfacing.

I may have learned about the Rockwell naming when I was looking up why the building at # 210 has a plaque about him. Turns out his family lived in that location (obv. torn down and replaced by current building) for a couple years when he was born. The kids at the high school across Amsterdam learned about him and did a project about 8 years ago to get the city to co-name the street, and succeeded.

Google says the Odessa Steward naming happened in 2011. http://www.nycstreets.info/honorStreeta7d6.html?b=M&letter=O

Okay, sounds like you have no better idea than I do. I guess I'll have to do some more research. I had found a document on the city website listing all the street names and alternates a month ago when I was trying to research the situation in the West 60s. But there was no clarity in it about how official they are (does the city use them when referring to street work? does the post office honor them so that they be used in addresses? etc.).

I'd never heard of Odessa Stewart Street until I saw your edit. I had been aware of the Norman Rockwell naming for some time.

How do you decide between an alt_name and an honourary_name, and what's the difference if any? The other end of this block has signage saying Norman Rockwell Place and nothing saying Odessa Stewart Street, but OSM lists both names there.

I'm wondering because there's a spot down in the 60s where the alternative signage needs to be fixed but I can't figure out the best choice for doing so.

Ira, I think very few getir stores were marked on OSM. MxxCon and I had a discussion some months ago when I added this one and the Gopuff across the street to the map because it was (still is?) somewhat unsettled how to handle dark_stores on OSM.

150943952 over 1 year ago

Dark and locked up this afternoon. Still some stuff in there if you need some wire shelving or a palette of toilet paper. Well, let's hope the storefront doesn't stay empty 6.5 years like the last time it was vacant.

Dunno about the sprinkler system, but they got dinged late last year due to something related to e-bike batteries.

Surprising. I thought I saw the place open as usual a couple days ago. Very strange that my neighbors have been quiet about it closing down.

Any particular reason you deleted the getir business name from the corner at 2681 B'way?

Thanks for noting this. I have just tried to fix it for the second time, but still I'm not sure if it's entirely correct. It's a building and it is not an industrial space. But now I have to wait for a few hours or more to see if OSM renders it as a building to be halfway sure?

150281181 over 1 year ago

It was a screw-up. I selected depot in the OSM web interface and didn't pay enough attention to see that it would change the area from building to something else

You might want to take a look at the edits I just made at this spot. I don't understand how to "layer" OSM areas, if it's even possible. So when I view the Peace Fountain on the OSM website now, I just see a statue in the middle of a pedestrian area. What I want/expect to see is a statue in the middle of a small garden in the middle of a pedestrian area. So somehow the garden just isn't rendered? Or maybe other OSM apps/tools show the garden above the bed area? <shrug />

150119149 over 1 year ago

I've gone back and forth as to whether to modify this POI to do exactly that.

The entire area around the statue could use some work, which may be why I've been so slow to do more than append a note.
