Mapping cycling highways in Flanders

The data model says that relations can contain, ways, nodes and other relations. If I thought it was a bad idea to have subroutes inside other routes, I wouldn’t have gone that route (pun intended) for mapping the cycling highways ‘in progress’. Personally I thought that was ingenious… Existing parts are in 2 relations. Temporary deviations were in 1 ‘master’ relation, creating a continuous string of ways. The to-be-built itinerary used the existing ways parts + the wenslijnen, planned parts that were not developed yet. This is not a matter of using routes as collections. This is giving the user the possibility to Visualize both what is planned AND what is the alternative until the real connections are present. With MapCSS you could even show them in 2 different colors. Now, I can show how things can be done, but if the community doesn’t like that, I am not going to insist. So I’m not entirely sure how it’s done nowadays. I guess the deviations are simply not mapped. Not a problem for a router, only a problem for someone who wants to Visualize it in a tool like JOSM or who likes to download using the query tool. With my solution, it was possible to easily compare the future direct itineraries with the deviations that need to be taken in the present, and even be able to see the progress over time. I have a lot less time for OSM, but this whole discussion is what contributed to my lesser contributing as well. That and the current state of the world, which makes me less of an idealist. It’s probably not smart to map all the infrastructure and deliver it to the enemy on a silver platter. And unfortunately we do have enemies, it’s unfortunate.

That’s a great explanation! Thank you for that tutorial.

It seems like you are using multipolygon relations. What about site relations?

For Russian, this is work in progress. Part of the reason why I wanted to see the video is to practice with a topic that has my interest, but if I can understand 10-15% at the moment it will be very good already.

Spasiba! Ya gatshu panimat Rusky jezik :-)

The Youtube video is set to private. Nobody can watch it.

State of the Map 2019 (SoTM 2019): I Took All My Chances

Wonderful story indeed. I’m glad for you it all worked out!

I don’t think the number of map edits influences the decision to support mappers with scholarships. It’s really hard, I think, to review all those applications and then decide which 21 there is enough budget for.

Really glad you are part of our community!

Public Transport V2 - many routes are invalid...

In the mean time it became obvious (after about 7 or 8 long years) that public_transport=platform will never render, whether accompanied by bus=yes, or not. So highway=bus_stop IS necessary and will remain necessary. This, of course, begs the question whether public_transport tags are actually useful. Maybe we can simply drop them.

But if we do that, does it still make sense that the stops get a platform role in the route relations and the stop_area relations?

So many questions. I don’t have the answers. Back when PT v2 was “voted”, I came up with double tagging, but that was with the expectation that highway=bus_stop would one day become unnecessary. It won’t.
