Me and OSM in a nutshell:

  • I could read and reply in both English and Thai (ภาษาไทย).
  • I use this map because it is libre, which is far more important than just being open.
  • I used heavily-customized field papers as main tool for collecting map data.
  • My personal rule for adding POI was basically “everything goes”.
  • I mapped in uber-detailed level within urban area; usually 4 metre apart between each feature, or less.
  • I commanded the no-frills Level0 for attribute edits, and the old-school Potlatch 2 for satellite-assisted edits.
  • You would know what each of my edits was about by looking at commit messages alone.

My participation in OSM is on indefinite hiatus since mid-2019, as my hard-earned pedestrian-compatible in-person-surveyed data got mangled and overwritten by corporate armchair mappers like Grab and their sockpuppets (not even counting other corporations putting falsehoods into the map in an industrial scale everywhere else in my country) without any real action from DWG. Half-inch-thick folder of un-entered fields papers rotting in my backpack is still reminding me of it to this day.

I’m unlikely going to participate again; unless OSM got a proper manual-survey-first policy, strict anti-sockpuppet policy; and ban+revert first ask-later treatment for corporate armchair mappers, as well as mass-importers or nontrivial automated mass-editing of any sort. The fact that main OSM interface have also stopped working under my main browser in 2022, as well as the old forum getting replaced by a JavaScript-only abomination called Discourse, simply reinforced what I see that the OpenStreetMap team just… don’t care for people like me.

Farewell.
