I’ve had a deeper look using Overpass Turbo and there seems to be a dearth of comic shops worldwide! At least in the UK local OSM mappers could use your link “a frakkin’ G00gle m*ps” to guide them to their local shop, check out the info on the ground and then add it to OSM. I reckon that would be legitimate surveying rather than copying from an illegal source.

Edit - ‘books = comic’ - singular.

Don’t know the answer to your question but your mention of tag ‘books-comics’ has enabled me to improve the tagging of this local comic shop node/2517131917 Previously I had just tagged it as ‘shop=comics’ which I wasn’t totally happy with but I couldn’t think of anything more accurate. Thanks :)

I had of course added Osmand to my recently purchased smartphone but definitely needed something like your guide to help me get the best out of it. AndiG88 - So presumably you would agree with me doing the sort of correcting mentioned in my question on the help forum? https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/30197/how-can-i-find-mis-spelled-tags-on-the-map The subsequent comments about ‘bulk editing’ really frightened me off doing anything further about checking and amending fairly obvious mis-spellings. I wouldn’t even know where to begin with ‘bulk’ or ‘automated’ editing!

As a relatively new contributor to OSM I didn’t realise that this was another step in the mapping exercise. I often think that there could be a more specific tag for something - especially for various types of shops/businesses. I’ve just created a page for tag ‘shop=business_machines’ here shop=_business_machines This was my first attempt at creating/editing a wiki page. I created it by opening a similar tag and changing the URL to ‘shop=business_machines’ (including the underscore) and then opening that URL and entering the details by using the first template which you mentioned. I’m concerned that the underscore doesn’t appear in the ‘title’ part of my new page. How do I correct it please? Any other comments about my page please? I’m keen to learn! Graham

I share your philosophy. It is very satisfying to start with a blank canvas (or almost blank if just the streets are already shown) and see it transformed into something colourful and interesting after many hours work. However, unlike an artist’s work, OSM art is never really finished - there is virtually always some other piece of information to be added!

I’m impressed with my first trial of this routing engine. Hi again, Here are a couple of links relating to pavements which may be considered as part of a street. @howdystranger/diary/20797#comments A Diary topic back in January raised by a user in Wellington. sidewalk=* The Map Features page about the suggested way to map/tag such pavements. (In my opinion adding the sidewalk=* tag to the main highway is a cleaner way of recording the information than mapping pavements separately but I do know that opinions differ widely on this subject!).

Also, as a cyclist, I’d be keen to see you add the cycleway=* tag to your local highways - more information here…… cycleway=*

Hi, I’d suggest that you use KeepRight http://keepright.ipax.at/report_map.php to check and where possible correct apparent discrepancies in the map. I found this an effective way to learn about how OSM works and it also gave me a useful direction for my mapping up here in Hamilton. These are just examples - there are quite a few other alerts for the Levin area from various users which you could try to correct/update. I regularly look at my local area on KeepRight as a check on my editing sessions - it is pleasing when nothing appears but, more importantly, very useful when something does appear and can be corrected. Think of it as a form of Quality Control!

It is one of the tools I use - provides an incentive for where to direct my bike rides and, like you, I always find other unmapped features to add to OSM.

Thanks Ed, I wasn’t aware of the ITO Maps - great idea. Would you like me to include the ‘sidewalk’ tag in my future mapping? (I can also gradually work through my local area and update existing info - using Overpass Turbo to identify streets with no sidewalk details.

Howdy, As a fellow NZ mapper I think that it is probably unnecessary for urban streets. I’d suggest that the assumed situation here in NZ is that there is a pavement (footpath) on both sides of the vast majority of urban streets. It is possible when mapping highways to add a tag ‘sidewalk’ with values of ‘both/left/right/separate/none’. I have never used this tag in my mapping but might consider using it with value ‘none’ on the few occasions I encounter a ‘pavementless’ street. For rural roads my assumption is that there won’t be a footpath but in situations like here osm.org/#map=15/-37.8130/175.3345 where a footpath is currently being constructed along Newell Road I will probably add the tag once construction is finished. With regard to mapping for the visually impaired you might like to look at the wiki page about Crossings osm.wiki/Crossing and think about mapping the various types of crossings for pedestrians in your area. There is the option of tagging features like sound or vibration alerts on these crossings. There is so much to learn – I regularly come across really useful tags which I could have used in the past if only I had been aware of them.

Just an edit to my previous post ……. ‘building=historic’ is wrong - please replace with ‘historic=heritage_building’. Graham

What an excellent addition to Overpass Turbo - thank you so much from a ‘non geek’ user! I can now find all the bicycle friendly routes in one hit by entering “highway=cycleway or cycleway=lane or bicycle=yes or bicycle=designated”. I have also been mapping historic information about buildings here in Hamilton (New Zealand) using ‘building=historic’ and ‘old_name’=* Being able to search for both sets of parameters at the same time is great. I’m just wondering how may more uses I’ll find for the wizard! Graham

Hi, It looks like the proposal from 2008 to create a tag “amenity=funeral_home” osm.wiki/Proposed_features/Funeral_home has been abandoned. The closest option seems to be tag “shop=funeral_directors” shop=funeral_directors

Does this help you? I’m not sure about funeral homes in Taiwan but, here in New Zealand, they offer both religious and non-religious services depending on the beliefs of the families of the deceased person. Graham
