And why I did this? Because I was sure that this is an incorrect tagging and it was very similar to other cases where it was clearly incorrect tagging.

Here I opened a note because I was unsure, closed it and did edit (as basically always I am too careful in such cases and I get questions why I created note instead of just editing it).

Later someone else reopened note and asked me to reconsider.

"Looking too orange" is not a valid reason for edit.

And as author of current road styling in OSM Carto (default map layer on OSM website) I can confirm that correctly tagged highly populated USA areas will be too red and too orange. This is one of consequences of a global map style with the same rules applying everywhere. I tried to reduce problem and balance it, but I have no succedeed in 100%.

But mistagging roads is not a solution.

Please, stop making such comments suggesting that you have some kind of power or right to decide what is the correct tagging.

OSM is not project where one person rules.

Note that in this specific case (trunk tagging) it appears that community of OSM editors have a different opinion how highway=trunk should be tagged (see talk-us mailing list discussion for an example)
