10 months ago | Further note, the NV 171 designation officially ends just before the tunnel at Sunset Road, and does not extend along the I 215 ramps.
10 months ago | Hello. Motorway was the correct classification here, since this is a multi-lane highway and not just a ramp or slipway, and per the Clark County OpenWeb, the correct name for this road is 'Airport Connector'.
10 months ago | Hello, Turning circles would be correct here. These half-turning circles at 90-degree street curves would be called 'knuckles', which can be specified with the 'turning_circle=knuckle' tag.
10 months ago | Hello. Please note that roads are not classified based on length but rather on the basis of connectivity with other roads and places and importance within the road network, and occasionally other factors such as traffic data and physical construction of the roadway. In this case, Smoke Ranch serves as a relatively busy arterial which serves commercial areas, and when combined with Carey Avenue, spans many other major roadways Between Buffalo and Nellis Blvd. Tertiary classification, in an urban scenario like this, usually applies to smaller, lower-traffic but still important roadways which we would call collector roads.
10 months ago | Hello, I have reverted your changeset because 'Future I 11' is not a valid value for the 'ref=*' key, unless it is officially signed and designated.
11 months ago | Trunk roads are for any sort of road, be it an expressway, urban arterial, 2-lane country highway, etc., just as long as they meet a certain criteria of importance. For example, this section of 146 links two freeway sections which in turn forms a major heavily-travelled route between Providence, Woonsocket, and Worcester. See here for info on trunk highway tagging in the US: osm.wiki/United_States/2021_Highway_Classification_Guidance#Trunk Additionally, here is the trunk road section of the Rhode Island highway classification guidelines, which identifies this route as a top-priority non-motorway corridor which should be tagged as trunk: osm.wiki/Rhode_Island/Highway_classification#Trunk_roads
11 months ago | Sorry, but I am not quite sure what I've done wrong here or what you're pointing out is incorrect. I had changed this section from motorway to trunk because it is part of Eddie Dowling Highway, which is primary/trunk, not the North Smithfield Expressway, which is tagged as a motorway. Assuming the change affects bicycle routing, you can use the 'bicycle=yes' or 'bicycle=no' tags on roads where applicable to indicate how they can be accessed by bikes, which would likely resolve your issue.
11 months ago | Thank you so much and happy mapping!
11 months ago | One of the segments I am referring to is this one: way/10201023/history This road segment was changed from asphalt to gravel in one of your changesets, and I am unsure if this is the correct surface, as it's not common but not too unusual for rural highways to be converted from asphalt to gravel, or if this was an accidental edit.
11 months ago | Hello! Do you know if gravel is the correct road surface for Pine Valley Road here, or was this an accidental change?
11 months ago | Hello, please use the 'ref=*' key for current official designations only. Future designations can be added under the 'fut_ref=*' key. For example: 'fut_ref=I 11' instead of 'ref=Future I 11'.
11 months ago | Hello and welcome to OpenStreetMap. For future reference, please use changeset comments that accurately describe the changes that you are making so that other editors may better understand what edits you've made and why you've made them. Many thanks.
11 months ago | Hello, please do not upgrade very short segments of highways with one or two interchanges to motorways, as these are not actually freeways. Per OSM's US motorway tagging guidelines, a highway with an isolated or brief freeway segment may be tagged as a motorway granted that it as at least a few miles long and has multiple interchanges and grade separations which would indicate that it's intended to be a freeway. osm.wiki/United_States/2021_Highway_Classification_Guidance#Motorway

11 months ago | Hello, what was your reasoning for upgrading Desert Inn Road to trunk here? Trunk road classification is intended to be used for major highways, like US 95, NV 160, or NV 146, which link major population centers and/or other major highways. The correct classification for DI Road here would be primary since it does not meet this criteria. See here for a more detailed explanation: osm.wiki/United_States/2021_Highway_Classification_Guidance#Trunk
11 months ago | Hello, I think Route 11 here would probably be fine as primary, because although it parallels I 81, it does serve as direct alt route to the Interstate which directly links Winchester, Stephens City, Middletown, and Strasburg. In my opinion, if the route was more like Route 52 along I 77 north of Wytheville towards WV, where there is little reason to use the road outside of as a local road or a bypass of congestion, secondary would be the ideal classification.
12 months ago | In regards to "there is nothing to imply oneway", the median in the middle and the narrow lanes around the median are enough for me to be confident that this is a traffic calming installation and that each way is one way due to this. There are plenty of roads in the country that are divided with median, roundabouts, and other obstacles which lack markings, but because of general traffic laws and what side of the road we drive on in the country, it is safe to assume one way in each direction on these roads.
12 months ago | My mistake, William Street was tagged as tertiary instead of residential. However, the tertiary tag, in an urban scenario, is typically for collector roads, which are smaller roads that serve as a through road and usually link to minor streets but are not as important as secondary and primary roads, (these two typically used for arterials and other major roadways).
12 months ago | Hello, the roads through Fredericksburg were correctly assigned their classifications per this classification page: osm.wiki/Virginia/Highway_classification Per the document, as well as the broad US highway classification guidelines, roads are classified based on their connectivity to places and other roads and importance in the road network. Since Route 3 BUS and US 17 BUS connect their respective mainline highways to the downtown area, primary would be the best classification for these routes. While they may appear to be residential roads as they have houses along them and a narrow, low speed construction, highway=residential is only used on streets that are used almost exclusively for accessing neighborhoods or other small streets, while William Street in particular links Route 1 and 3 and I 95 to Downtown Fredericksburg, 17/2 Business plays the same role here, linking the Downtown to the Route 3 bypass and down towards mainline Route 17 and eventually Route 301. Traffic also plays a role in highway classification (in cooperation with other criteria). Per this map (https://www.arcgis.com/apps/mapviewer/index.html?webmap=bff29e1bc0fd4908b2c035fe67695088), William Street sees 11k average daily traffic while a true residential street in the area will see only about ~1k AADT.
12 months ago | The link was not changed to motorway, but rather a motorway link, since it's a median break of the highway rather than a part of the service lot itself. Motorways and motorway links alike can be tagged with access=private granted that the tagging scheme reflects both the physical construction of the roadway and the access.
