New Host for OSM data , archive.org

I should point I'm not implying an batch/automatic import, we are (slowly) importing the Australian postcodes by hand, OSM files were generated from shape files and then people can load these in JOSM and create postcode boundary relations using the information.

Although the main reason we're doing it manually is because other similar boundaries exist from the same organisation that released the postcode data, so boundaries for various administrative areas are shared, eg postcodes, suburbs, states etc.

If you have (approximate) boundary areas for the zip codes, why not import them as admin_level=8,boundary=administrative?

GPX drive trace of Dayboro - harder than I thought!

I came to the same conclusions some time ago, it's easiest to survey streets and map them, then go back for names, it's just too difficult to do anything else on your own.

However having said that there is a lot of data available with the map boundary data for Qld that should allow you to plot basic streets out for any Qld town, and then do the survey + street names at the same time.

The dangers of surveying for OSM in Australia

I thought they'd be done nesting by now?

Anyway someone previously suggested mapping out magpie areas on OSM in the past ;)

OSM and Censorship

Bar fights are common in the US too, but also illegal. Just because something is common doesn't make it legal. Once something is "published" it automatically becomes covered by copyright, and it's not only polite but required to obtain permission before reproducing it publicly if it wasn't publicly published by the original author.

As for defamation, I don't know about the US laws on this but thankfully it was changed in other jurisdictions where truth is now a valid defense. However the posting on this was more conjecture and less truth so that wouldn't be much help either.

ByCycle.org: Not Our Friend

Of course most people touting things like freedom of speech usually means "my right to say what ever the hell I want" but even free speech has it's limits, when you are harassing someone you have lost your right to say it. When you start spouting lies that's not freedom of speech that's defamation and again you loose your right to say it.

This seems to me to be very borderline harassment and more to the point it's just not very polite. Didn't your mother ever tell you that if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all?

Mind you for some reason someone somewhere has also interpreted free speech to mean religious nutters on megaphones are allowed to interrupt people trying to have a nice dinner out in a public place, to me this is borderline harassment too, he can say what ever he likes up until it starts to interfere with my right to talk to my friends.

Please remove this diary entry, it just serves to alienate potential OSM users and contributors...

Novel Way to further the Interests of the OSM Family

Both these diary entries should be removed, it does nothing for any party but to alienate people further.

Addressing addresses

I thought postcodes were supposed to be tagged as boundaries these days, rather than redundantly tagging individual locations?

Countering Google's propaganda

Philip some people have tried, it's not even possible at present to get your own edits back out of Google, even though they state you own them.

Countering Google's propaganda

$50k is probably a very cheap way to get a lot of free press, it's just a shame that the media will not bother to check if anything better exists and expose this scam on their own, instead people that actually care have to give this sort of PR spin the daylight disinfection to clean up their mess as a result :/

GPX voice markers?

I've been making a few OSM type apps for Android, I had one previously that did voice nav but the GPX overlay was chewing up too much CPU time and in the end I ended up scraping the app.

Free time is pretty scarce this time of year, I'll try and get something redone in the new year.

NearMap.com

It's unlikely, due to the size, that anyone in Carnarvon is aware of OSM or NearMap, but this effort was in part to raise awareness by making an example :)

Scanex to grant OSM access to IRS satellite imagery

They don't need to make a plugin to access tiles, they just need to file a bug against the slippymap plugin with the relevant URL to access the tiles. This was recently done for NearMap.com imagery in Australia.

OSM's mapnik tiles update within 5mins or so of uploading, however browsers cache the tiles for a lot longer and you either need to clear the cache in your browser or click on the perma link and then hit ctrl+shift refresh to do the same thing.

NearMap.com

@JigPu yup the imagery is great, but only covers a very small fraction of the land mass.

JOSM on the Eeepc

I have the same eeePC, and in a few hours one afternoon James and myself managed to do half the street names in Redcliffe, Qld.

However it's best if there is 2 people, it's very difficult doing it by yourself, but still possible.

West Perth, Western Australia

Do you know about the NearMap imagery?

osm.wiki/NearMap_PhotoMaps

They're based in WA so there is lots of WA imagery...

use layer= to order the over/under passes

layer=0 is ground level, layer can be -5 to 5...
