Changeset When Comment

Hi, I've updated my tagging for this road. I have some knowledge of this road because of the issues it's having with drivers (or SatNavs) using it an alternative to the A3. There is a section that is NSL Restricted but I have not mapped as lit=no, because there is a very large gap between Street Lamps. The Highways Authority do consider NSL Restricted despite large gap in Street Lights, and can not make it a signed 30mph section.

Thanks,

Can you tell me what where your reasons for removing the maxspeed:type= sign ?

And onto a different subject. It is possible for a road to be OSM lit=yes, and not meet the legislative requirements for a UK NSL restricted speed limit. This really complicates things for mapping UK speed limits.

Hi Nathan_A_RF,

You've removed the maxspeed:type=sign tag from a section of road.
way/23116304

The road has a 30 mph speed limit provided by signs (it's not lit). So according to UK mapping conventions it should have the maxspeed:type=sign tag.

It is missing the lit= tag.

I know the road and am happy to update some tagging along it. But want to hear you views first.

gurglypipe. just wanted to apologise if you read my initial comment about sources as being adversarial. I didn't mean anything by it.

I think this is a subject for the Discussion Forum. I'm travelling for a few days, but I'll post something when I get back home.

Should have added that the "Implied Rights of Access" is easily removed by having a locked gate, or signs simply stating "NO ACCESS unless ......"

Hi gurglypipe,

We can turn this around and ask "what is the source for tagging these ways as access=private

For OSM access=private means that journeys along the way (or through a barrier) require specific permission. Therefore the access=private tag would stop necessary journeys to a front door (eg Post & deliveries)

In the UK it is accepted that there is a need to visit the front door or main entrance of a property on private land. Therefore the UK has an "Implied Rights of Access" to reach a Front Door or Main entrance. This "Implied Rights of Access", must be used in a minimal way. That means pedestrian only, unless the journey involves a long journey to a front door (eg farm), which case use of a vehicle is considered reasonable.

The most reasonable tag we have for this is access=destination for the way that is used to reach a front door.

Hi U42,

This changeset changed the road from "residential" to "living_street". I know the road and it does not meet the used definition for living_street. I definitely feel it falls under residential street. The tag has evolved for the needs to maps roads common in mainland Europe where the tag is needs for -"basically implies driving at walking pace, no separate pavements, no parking except in marked spaces, and all road users (including pedestrians!) have equal priority. Such streets are always residential in character."

The nearest we have to that in the UK are HomeZones, they're rare but there is one about a mile east of here.
