which seems to describe the size of the protected area.
I think there is no need to map the size
in OSM, but if you do, I think a tag like area_size="1.862 ha" is much better.
The attribute surface is for values like grass,gorund,asphalt.

Yep. Still, the wiki for man_made=pier says
"Most piers can be mapped as an open way for the length of the pier tagged with man_made=pier; wider piers should be tagged as an area."

Thanks for the feedback. I guessed that layer was meant (I fixed plenty of them yesterday) but did not understand that it is some kind of man_made=pier. The surface=wood tag makes that clearer now.
