Changeset When Comment

Ah, I see. Whenever the wiki shows a highway=* that means that you should replace the * by a meaningful value. Not only with highway, this is always true.
I see no need to map the area, esp. not when you alse map the node with highway=turning_circle

Thanks Sean,
I'll change the island tomorrow. On some other similar objects I simply changed the natural tag to was:natural=coastline, that should be OK for this one as well.

I've only read the comments in the thread after you mentioned the TAP. I think nobody agreed with you in those comments.
See e.g. http://gis.19327.n8.nabble.com/How-to-tag-named-group-of-named-water-areas-tp5923692p5926559.html
I've just loaded all relations with route=pipeline. They have a total of 4119 way members, 3667 of them have the man_made=pipeline tag, most of those ways which are not tagged man_made=pipeline are in fact not pipelines but waterways, fences , highways, piers , you name it. In other words, quite a lot of garbage.
A consumer cannot simply assume that all members are pipelines.
Now, guess what happens when you remove the tags from the ways which describe what it is.

64027881 about 7 years ago

Hi Dave,
I think each type of relation has its own rules. You cannot simply transfer the rules for multipolygons. Example: In mp rels the order of the members doesn't matter, in hiking relations it is important. In mp rels also the roles do not really matter because consumere programs don't need them, they are only important for the mappers. In other relation types the roles are very important. In case of route=pipeline rels
there are not many documented rules because they are not important to many users. If you want to establish a new tagging system for pipelines you have a good chance, you just have to convince those who are interested. I am not one of them, I just try to convince you that you should not start to do your own thing just because it looks better to you. You simply risk that someone reverts your work
when you act against common rules.

Reg. Iditarod Trail: If you want to remove the name tags from the ways I say that is good. These ways probably have no name, they are just part of a route.
I did something like that, see this discussion:

Hi!
The tag highway=turning_loop should not be used on ways, use it only on nodes where you don't want to draw the loop itself:
way/640722514
Think it is a highway=path? Isn't this area
way/640722522 part of the park
way/80798482 ?

64184987 about 7 years ago

Thanks for the quick feedback. I think highway=path ist best then. If you like you can add bridge:material=wood.
You should not use highway=residential for ways which are too narrow for normal cars.
Why do you add the tag import=yes here?

osm.wiki/JOSM/Guide

Hi! Please don't use the tag highway=traffic_calming. I've removed it here:changeset/64220325
The tag traffic_calming=island is normally only used on nodes. I think you may use landuse=grass for these two. Or maybe remove them because of the natural=tree_row ways.

62971588 about 7 years ago

Hi! Please don't use the tag highway=traffic_calming for a traffic_calming=island. I also don't think that this object should be tagged with addr:*
So, I'd remove all but traffic_calming=island from way way/628519871

64184987 about 7 years ago

Oops, forgot to say that highway=footway is the normal tag for footways, highway=pedestrian is a bit more special, see also highway=pedestrian

64184987 about 7 years ago

Hi! I've noticed this changeset because of the typo highway=pedes used here:
way/641094694
Are all those bridges really pedestrian only? What about horses, bicycles or motor_cycles? If you are not sure I'd suggest to use highway=path instead, also for the small ways leading to the bridge(s).

64175095 about 7 years ago

I would also not use a key like
I think website is used for this, or maybe just note.

64175095 about 7 years ago

Hi again!
The tag highway=historical is only used here. I'd suggest to use historic=bridge
and maybe remove the bridge=yes tag.

64167000 about 7 years ago

Hi and welcome to OSM!
Please check typo highway=foodway.
way/640883723
I assume you meant footway. I did not change it yet because this area crosses the building
way/314952425
so maybe it should be split or - if it is underground - needs a layer=-1 tag.
Hope this helps?

64182972 about 7 years ago

Hi!
Please use the lifecycle prefixes on the tag key, not on the value. So, way/543950367
should be disused:highway=path instead of highway=disused:path.
See also osm.wiki/Lifecycle_prefix

64213901 about 7 years ago

Hi! You seem to search for a tag to map the area of the highway ? Do you know area:highway?
osm.wiki/Key%3Aarea%3Ahighway

64027881 about 7 years ago

Please post a link to that other wiki entry.
To make that clear: I personally don't prefer to have all the tags repeated on every way, I just think that this is the way how the community does it and therefore it should be done that way.
I am sure that it is possible to add rules to mkgmap styles to handle this, but I found none which does it. I guess only very few data consumers have rules to handle this because you created an exception here.

64065641 about 7 years ago

Hi and welcome to OSM!
You changed a part of 04Н-497 from highway=tertiary to motorway here with oneway=yes. Bing doesn't show a motorway here, so I reverted this.
I've also changed highway=yes to highway=residential on way/496430591
See changeset/64201369
I see that you added a few more residential roads in this area which are not visible in Bing or other sat images. Do they already exist or are they only planned?
If you have local knowledge, please add survey as source to your changeset comments.
