We at OSM have to map things how they are on the ground and the access=no should be used when "no access" signs are in place. Is this the case?

I guess that's because this trail is bike specific and hikers are not allowed. The mapnik render looks deceiving with that gray colour. Wouldn't it be better to tag it as bicycle=designated + foot=no ?

Hi, I'm pretty sure they are, do you live in the area? 95% of the building in the western countries are square, and most of those are no exception. Unluckily the aerial imagery of this area are quite poor, otherwise you'd have easily notice that.
I'd square those as I'm still convinced they are. In case you're not sold on this, you might survey the area and report here if I'm right or wrong.
