I'm one of the users mapping sidewalks and footpaths as individual ways. I looked into the various methods before I started this project and I landed on separating the ways for a couple of reasons:

1. In Lansing, we have a lot of incomplete sidewalks that don't follow the road all the way from end to end

2. I attended a work group at State of the Map where it was indicated to me that separate ways allow for better control of accessibility, like steps, crossings, curbs, tactile etc

I'm open to either but I'd hate to see us spinning our wheels by redoing each other's work.
