Thanks to all for some very welcome suggestions. Having read through the Wiki, it all looks pretty straight forward. Now to generate some trails. I have (on loan) a O2 XDA which will run GPS Cycle Computer, but when I hand it back, I am left with my iPhone. I have looked on the AppStore for suitable GPS trail software, but all the apps listed have c**p reviews! Does anyone have experience of iPhone (3G) based apps for making trails?

Just signed up to OSM, as I am interested in contributing to some of the missing areas of minor roads in my local area. I have no clue how this is done... I guess a gps trail generated by cycling or walking around my housing estate would be reasonably accurate. How could that get incorporated into the current maps database.
