I've had fun in ski holiday last week. Beautiful weather and a lot of snow in Zermatt, Switzerland. So I started to map my first aerial ways and pistes by carry my receiver downhill.

So I joined the Piste Maps [1] project.

What already works are simple aerialway [2], but only with osmarender, not mapnik. Pistes [3] are still in early discussion phase, but I already tried some of the tags. They seems to work fine. But they still needs some cleanup.

Happy skiing or snowbording, the next ski holiday is coming!

Cheers, Andy

Hi,

Anyone else reading this from the Nelson area and own a GPS? I've been mapping what I can of the area since the end of last year and Stoke is certainly looking quite good now, but still quite a bit of missing detail for Nelson and Richmond.

I've discovered the 'uber-device' for doing this sort of thing: the Nokia E90 Communicator. The built-in GPS works well, and the Nokia Sports Tracker allows direct export to GPX format. Additionally, the camera and PDA-style functionality work well on mapping expeditions.

Got myself a mountain bike at the start of January (after a 2+ year gap of no cycling) so am combining getting fitter with getting the area mapped!

And... My other half helps - she does lots of running and recently got a Garmin Forerunner GPS watch - which can also export traces to GPX with some additional software...

Started using Merkaartor, but now using Potlatch as I got fed up with it failing to create roads and then leaving a load of orphaned points on the map! Looked briefly at JOSM but can't say I like its interface very much!

Alkaa nuo kaikki tiet olemaan sen verran hyvin paikallaan, että siirryin maalailemaan karttaan landuse-tagilla alueita. Lähinnä residential-tagia on tullut viljeltyä paikkoihin, jossa tällaista aluetta on. Rajat eivät ole mitenkään kymmenenteen desimaaliin tarkkoja vaan osin paikallistuntemukseen perustuvia.

Eilen tuli tallikoitua Hämeensaaren alueella ja otettua kulmapisteitä rakennuksista ja kentistä. Siellä ne ovatkin jo kartalla. Yahoon aerial fotoja odotellessa joutuu tekemään tällaista summittaista sijoittelua.

I'm discovering some little laneways and twisty little passages of Armidale township that I've not explored before. The map is coming along nicely but I need a couple of larger chunks of time to map the northest and southwest corners of town where there are some still-to-be-mapped residential areas.

At some stage I need to map the creek that flows (sometimes) through town - the Landsat image isn't high resolution but I'll see if I can make do.

I am new to OpenStreetMap.

At one time I was with a local Volunteer Fire Department. In Texas there are a number of Tax supported operations that update maps for emergency services and 911 use. These maps are updated several times a year. I was able to get the local map and with TurboCad read the format and convert it to DFX. I then could print out updated map pages and put sub-divisions that were spread out over two or more pages in the 'map books' that we were provided on to one 11 x 17 page.

This information should be able to be obtained by OpenStreetMap, and would help as it is much more accurate the the US Census Bureau data. There are a number of these operations in the state. For the San Antonio, Bexar Count, TX and the adjacent counties it is:

Bexar Metro 9-1-1 Network District
911 Saddletree Court
San Antonio, TX 78231-1523

There is a complete list of the districts for Texas at:

Tuesday: started work on detailed mapping of Newmarket, Suffolk, dealing with the race course and the residential areas to the north and west. It'll take a while - population about 15,000 so about 15 hours of surveying of which I did about three this week, so maybe 5 visits should see it done. It's only 10 miles from home though, so a bit more accessible than the remaining bits of South Cambridgeshire out towards St Neots.

The racecourse and related paraphernalia involved quite a few tags I'd not needed to use before, but much of the rest of the town in this part is rather dull ex-council housing residential (there's also a large industrial area which I didn't really start on, straddling Exning Road).

Discovered the Newmarket end of NCN51, which leads from Exning all the way into Newmarket town centre, most of it entirely away from the road down a small stream valley, so that got me back to the station and got mapped into the bargain (someone had obviously tried before, but maybe got lost, as it tailed off in the middle of a housing estate).

Okay, discovered files which were good for Geotagging photographs are too long to OSM in terms of fair share of processing time.

Now cutting track logs down to below < 5000 points where possible.

Projects,

Highlands of Scotland - 10 years of GPS track logs, but only plan to upload tracks under 5 years old as well aware of new road layouts in certain areas of the highlands.

Derbyshire/Staffordshire Peak District, uploading extensive data covering white peak.

Lake district, less popular areas, uploading data covering western and northern areas.

Royal Deeside, minor roads.

I have finally been out on my bike for the first time in a couple of months. I'm slightly concerned about the gears and the tyre pressure was slightly lower than I might've hoped. I'll check it again later when I can borrow the pump.

Anyway, I've completed all the roads off Bearwood Road, except one or two at the top end that were under construction when I was there last. Stanhope Road has me a little confused. I'll have to go out again sometime with the objective of checking where it actually goes.

Some roads in that area I managed to get while out on my driving lessons but am missing names for. It's probably worth going out there in future and surveying the whole area again properly.

Hi everyone,

I joined OSM about 6 months ago and I have been mapping around Canberra and the far south coast (Bega valley) since then. I initially started mapping using potlatch and since then moved to JOSM. The feature that prompted me to change to JOSM was the photomapping option which allows me to photograph a streetsign and located it on JOSM.

The combination of GPS, PDA and a digital camera while cycling around is a good combination which has allowed me to (nearly) complete the streetname coverage in the inner northern suburbs of Canberra over a number of lunchtime cycle rides. The maplint addition on the web page is very handy in highlighting the missing streetnames etc.

Now on to map Aranda next lunchtime.

Cheers,
Max

I have a whole bunch of tags I need to propose: amenity=crematorium, shops=parade (a hard one, since a parade normally runs along one side of a highway only), amenity=village_hall, amenity=ambulance_station, etc, but it just seems too much hassle to follow them through, push them for votes etc. So I'll leave myself a note here that I need to do something about these some time...
