0.7 is now live (thanks Tom) and has just one big improvement: it now fills your browser window.

So please be nice to the server and don't go full-screen at 2048x1024 on zoom level 12 in London!

One of the good things about this is that the greater screen space should give room for more funky things in the future (e.g. some form of online help). Coping with the Yahoo API has, of course, proved interesting. I think it's mostly there (and I've removed the really really hackish way that Potlatch used to communicate with it), but let me know of any difficulties.

Hello,

Started seriously mapping the 13th arrondissement of Paris today, around my area. I'm going to check road names, traces, oneways, public buildings, amenities, etc, to compile a detailed and accurate map. Starting from the north-west corner of the 13th arrondissement, I'll progress to the south-eastern side.

Completing the arrondissement should take me at least up to the summer '08, maybe more for buildings, landuse.

S'il y a des gens sur le 13e n'hésitez pas à me contacter pour s'y mettre à plusieurs et éventuellement se rencontrer.

This story already happened on Tuesday but I'd still like to share it.

I'm working part-time at a place out of town, ca. 10km from home. After work I usually go mapping in that area and this time decided to map a village called Völkenrode. So I cycled a few kilometer further apart from home, started mapping the southern part of the village and moved farther north. Having reached one northern corner I saw a track leading to a railway-crossing in the distance (allready dark outside). So I went there, drove a few meters along the attached tracks and realised a bridge in the distance. So I went further to map that bridge. From that bridge I saw another railway and went off again.
Shortly behind that railway my saddle felt kind of strange beneath my ass. So I went of the bike, and within seconds held the loose saddle in my hand. The pipe attaching it to the frame was broken! There I was, about 20km from home, in the dark and cold, apart from any civilisation (let alone a bikeshop) and unfinished mapping.
So I had to finish mapping and drive all the way back home standing. Man, that sucked!

Obviously it took me a whole week to get my computer up and running again. Luckily the disk did not just stop working, but started to work flaky. This morning I finished the reinstallation on a new disk and went out for a cycle ride in the afternoon.

On top of that my mp3 player/recorder crashed too. But this one was not recoverable. (Don't try DreckStore, broke after less than a year.) So no audio mapping in the near future.

I went to Unterbach, but mainly mapped the paths to get there. In Unterbach I watched their Karnevalszug before riding back to Gerresheim, where I traced about 10 more resendential streets between Quadenhof- and Heyestraße.

Heute hab ich zum zweiten mal das Bewegungsmittel "Fuß" gewählt.
Normalerweise benutze ich das Rad oder das Auto (wenn ich sowieso unterwegs bin).
Ich hab zumindest das Gefühl, das tracking gelingt zu Fuß viel genauer, als wenn man so schnell unterwegs ist ;)

Morgen geht es wieder nach Mössingen, dort ist auch noch vieles zu tun....

Nice afternoon so out for couple of hours exercise on the bike mapping around south Cheshunt. Surveyed a new roundabout on Lt Ellis Way that I didn't even know about. Will add to map untagged, with note to FIX as soon as it is open.
Also can add a new dimension to the bridge/viaduct saga. On way back followed the towpath of the canalised River Lea as it crosses the M25. This is just to west of the A10 junction. It crosses the motorway in an aqueduct but to all intents and purposes is a tunnel at the same time. It disappears "underground" and is covered over in such a way that the towpath is actually on top of the canal itself for a short while. Not sure how I will tag it - probably as canal + bridge, with a note to say that it is "undergound".

Anna and I took a stab at mapping "Chippy" today, which was pretty much terra incognita away from the main roads. It's looking a lot better already, and perhaps more importantly, it helps to expand the "complete coverage" belt centred around Oxford - Woodstock, Charlbury etc. are all finished, and Witney appears to be coming on in leaps and bounds.

Vaulting went well; no-one died. I got a little worried when cartwheels were mentioned but I actually managed to do one today. Hoorah!

Coverage of Shrewsbury is a little improved. I got done about half the area inside the loop of the river, for road coverage, at least. I've still got streetnames to do. Unfortunately my photos don't seem to be lining up with the GPS trace properly again. I could be here a while...

I spent Friday lunchtime driving around a new (to me) part of Armidale. I've had no reason to visit this part of town before - the north-east corner - it's not on a route to anywhere.

It's interesting to note the difference in the street layout in this newer part of town compared to older parts. The older parts of town are laid out in a traditional grid pattern - roads are straight and run parallel to one another. In the new parts of town the roads are curved and wavy, with lots of cul-de-sacs.

Normally, I spent 30 to 90 minutes a day cycling, which results in another 30 to 90 minutes editing in JOSM. Yesterday, for the first time, I felt motivated to spend my whole day mapping. I cycled about 4 hours and spend another 4 hours in JOSM. Plus about 1 hour other mapping realted work, this is all I can do per day.

As some of you know (beacuse I tell this every time...) I use audio mapping which produces huge amounts of data that you can not see from the GPS track. I've done all the way from Wernigerode to Ilsenburg (white spot on the map till then), some streets there, and the way back via Drübeck and Darlingerode.

The OSM highscore list

When I now looked into the User statistics I read that this sums up to only 910 "edit points" (it does not say if it counts nodes or ways or tags...). Which gives me a "glorious" rank 43 for that single day. If I do this for the next 4 days, too, I might have a small chance to get into the top 60 mappers of the week, but wait a moment: There's a weekend in between!

Don't get me wrong, my main motivation for mapping is fun, then comes sport, then comes the need of a cycle map for this region, then the good feeling to share information, and then on rank 5 comes the "fame" to be in some list (which no one reads and which is gone tomorror). Other motivations to follow...

I understand that there are some users running automated cleanup bots or import scripts, but I guess there numver is finite. So how do they do this? To reach the score of, let's say "hogrod" I had to do audio mapping 37 hours per day :) And then this would get me on rank 14. Without the audio I would need about 60 hours to generate this amount of data.

I'm out vaulting again tomorrow. This time with my old team near Shrewsbury.

I've been making some effort to get something done each time I visit. Hopefully I'll have time to do some of the roads around the town centre. Just to join up a few things that are there already.

Just now I fixed up some roads by the railway station. It's a complicated junction made very difficult to work out from GPS because several railway tracks passing overhead. There's a tunnel right underneath one set, various other roads joining nearby. Only with my local knowledge was I able to get that in.

Next up is the railway lines themselves.

If anyone else could verify it looks reasonably correct, please do so and let me know your opinion.

Just saw this today about a new camera that GE will be selling soon.

What looks interesting from an OSM point of view is that it includes a GPS unit that records where images where taken. It also sounds like it should have a reasonable zoom range and shouldn't be too expensive. No idea what the image quality or shutter lag will be like though. Shutter lag is bad for trying to catch road signs from moving cars! ;-)

For me, a camera that automatically geotags images would be great for mapping areas where roads have been drawn from aerial imagery, but not tagged with names and references. It would save having to carry round a GPS and a camera, and also removes the need for synching times.

Just thought i'd flad it up as others might be interested too.
