It was a pleasant evening last night, so I went out to attempt to map some of the London Cycle Network.

It doesn't help that I live in Barnet. London Borough of Barnet have quietly been sitting on a budget provided by Transport for London for cycle facilities and doing almost nothing. As such, what cycle routes that exist in the borough have either had their signs removed, or lane markings removed, or lane markings worn out over time, and fingerposts have been rotated.

To make things worse, the official maps available from Transport for London direct cyclists down many footpaths that are clearly signposted "no cycling", and any route numbers or other designations appear to have been changing, undocumented, unsignposted, or just plain wrong over time.

So here's a question to anyone else mapping the London Cycle Network : have you cross-checked the numbers on the signposts with the 'official' post-2007 maps?

So,

On Friday, surveyed the villages of Cheveley, Ashley, Kirtling (and Kirtling Green and Upend) and Saxon Street all in East Cambridgeshire district south of Newmarket, but it's taken until today to find time to do the plotting. This completes this pocket of Cambridgeshire south of Newmarket giving continuity right down the eastern edge of Cambs.

Problems with the N810 again - it keeps going off. I suspect the battery contacts aren't quite tight enough so there's a momentary loss of power when I go over a bump. I've bent them a little bit to make better contact, and I'll have to see if I can pout some damping in the handlebar bracket somehow.

This weekend I got a couple of traces + photos while my brother drove in and around Plymouth. He wasn't slowing down to let me get good photos though, so I shall have spend a few hours squinting at blurry street sign pictures tonight. I'll probably be able to add a peculiar random scattering of streets to the map.

Three days and forty kilometers of trekking between Neuhaus and Bayrischzell near the German-Austrian border southly from München gave quite a lot of new trails for OSM along with some new peaks and alpine huts. There is still quite a lot of snow, so some snow-covered trails may be marked a little bit aside.

While updating Mobile Track Explorer i bumped into OSM in its source and thought i'd might check it out. The idea is great and also it's great to know that so many people have already contributed their time into such an effort.

It seems that there are some blank areas in the map near where i live, so i might give it a try in a near future. And my parents' hometown is completely unmapped, that will be a bigger challenge.

I'm really looking forward to this, i've always wanted to do something similar, but never had the guts ;)

I've recently bought a Bluetooth GPS thingy for my mobile phone, so now I'm looking for things to do with it. Installed Nav4All which I think is good enough to justify my purchase to SWMBO.
Found this site by accident really, and thought it was a really great idea. I've added my street at home, and extended a road into a junction on my way to work.
I have got plans to add some of the missing minor roads around where I work, and maybe my local estate too to try and get the hang of this mapping lark.
Maybe stick a few of the local footpaths/bridleways in too if the weather lets me get out on a few walks this summer...

So I've belonged to OSM now for slightly more than 6 months.
I haven't been out in my car for a couple of months after getting water in the motor on a long mapping trip, but last weekend we went in the work ute to Wollongong. After 150km we decided it was time to get a map and choose a route which was unmapped.
So we went exploring, mapped a bit in some towns and villages and finally got back to the main road.
On the way home another unmapped road was chosen, but more fun than that I tried taking photos of street and road signs, for geotagging. It's quite an art getting a photo in focus at 100kmh so some are good and others aren't.
It's great to photograph strange road junctions, overhead bridges with height limits, road names, the speed limit signs and faster than the pen and paper method. Then the camera battery was flat and the photos were stopped.
I'm having a lot of fun deciding where to go and what to see, and still lending out my GPS to get more traces of more roads.

My plans to go out mapping during the lovely summer weather keep getting messed up by the fact that the weather isn't lovely. I had big plans to go out and do a lot more of Soham by bike yesterday, but as it was raining we decided just to go out for a walk instead. Of course I took the GPS, but somehow the 'pause' button got pressed while it was in my pocket so I now have 3 traces, only one of which is really useful. I've added the data to the map, but it looks a bit odd to be honest - footpaths and a stream that start and stop in the middle of nowhere, tiny sections of road that aren't connected to anything. Maybe that will give me the incentive to go back sooner rather than later to finish the job - the roads will be easy to finish on 2 wheels at least.

Bom pessoal,
Eu comecei pela Tijuca, bairro da zona norte do Rio de Janeiro, com o objetivo de ir até o Grajaú, que ainda está sem detalhamento. Vou estudar um pouco a numeração das ruas e em seguida atualizar o mapa.

Well, the bluetooth GPS unit arrived on Saturday, bits of software have been installed on the mobile, and done some playing.
So far traced a car journey from Newcastle to Corbridge and then returned using Nav4All as a route planner. Also mapped a couple of walks from home, but noticed my estate seems to be badly mapped :-\ If this nice weather continues, I see a walk around of the estate to remap it.
Looking forward to the Durham mapping party on June 7/8th.
